Oh god, did you have to go and bring this up again, especially as you hadn't even noticed it

Her vocabulary, accent, pronunciation etc. is just a reflection of where, how and with whom she grew up. Given all those things, she sounds exactly like you would expect ! The same can be said of everyone on the planet ! Wonder if the "Have a moan about Alesha " brigade speak faultlessly themselves ?

Actually I do.
At least I do speak faultlessly given the right circumstances. Not perhaps on New Year's Eve at 23.58 or when in a long queue at the supermarket. However, were I to be employed as a talking head on the BBC I would speak as clearly and distinctly as I could.

Oh please everyone, we've been round and round this, is there really anything new left to say? Can't we just drop it?

Yeah, kn, you're right.

I would too. People say it doesn't matter but it absolutely does, particularly if you're in the public eye. Talking correctly costs nothing so why not do it properly?

There are plenty of people with regional accents, including cockney, who do not confuse was and were. Len is a good example. Alesha makes a basic error and one which she can correct. I am sure there are people at the Beeb who can help her. I do not bash Alesha, I like her, and I think she is intelligent. She would make a good presenter but not with that grammar. It is worth her while to take time over her grammar. If she was, say, James Jordan, "I done....", or Anton, it wouldn't matter at all because their roles are not primarily speaking ones.

The was/were thing grates on me, but this isn't specific to Alesha - I have that reaction whenever I hear bad/wrong grammar on TV, unless it's deliberate (e.g. a drama set in the east end)

What do people think of Sir Alan's was/were usage on the Apprentice? I found his dodgy grammar irritating to begin with, but I now can't imagine him any other way. I'm not quite there with Alesha though...

I love Alesha but that really grates on me - not just with her but with anyone who says it - I just find myself muttering 'were' all the time

I find her painful to the ear and totally cringeworthy. I have a secretary born and brought up in the Eastend and she speaks perfect English.

It's ironic isn't it, Bruno speaks it as a foreign language but sounds better than Alesha. I can't see this this doing her career any good at all. Through no fault of her own, except believing her own PR, she comes over as plain thick

Glad to see so many fresh new points being made on this issue.

Am I the only one on here who thinks this subject has been done to death?

I've already made my comment on this subject, so have nothing else to add, but maybe some of the fresh posters to the thread just wanted to add their own view?

I'm sure that's the case, but if it's exactly the same view which has already been repeated over the last six pages then it's hardly adding to the discussion.

That's true enough, but sadly people don't always read the entire thread before posting.

(I know that I am guilty of that myself, sometimes, if it's a particularly long thread ).

Alesha were great last weak. She have done well and I hope she gets beter. Gramar ain't a big deal cos it's like a living thing, it envolves over time so what is wrong today is rite tomorow.

“I was so pleased to see this thread, just to know that I'm not the only pedant!

Presumably, Alesha has advisors, and 'Strictly' certainly has a whole production team, so I think it would be an act of kindness if someone guided her over her poor grammar.

It's already been mentioned that she is bright, and she's obviously determined to succeed. I would have thought that, if she can learn all those dances, brushing up her speech would be a piece of cake!

I can't remeber who but someone tonight, possibly Tess, said 'should of' instead of 'should have' - another of my pet hates.”

Spelling mistake! You misspelt 'remember'. Thickie alert!! Oh, back of the class for you. Zero points from the judging panel. Tess, it's over to you. Thanks, Brucie... Waffle waffle blah blah blah, Brucie bonus, Play Your Cards Right...

Great post floopy! Posters who don't write properly always come across as so thick. Oops, was that a bit harsh? Nah, can't be, people are saying the same thing about Alesha so I'm sure it's fine.

Alesha is a guest on the Jonathan Ross show on BBC1 next Friday (16th).

Ian Wright speaks similar to Alesha on Live From Studio Five. He should be sacked too. And get rid of Anton Dumb Burkface. He is racist. Fire him. Who else is there? Ant and Dec! They're annoying and speak funny northern accents. They don't speak proper! Fire them too!

Why can't we just have everyone fired who we don't like? It's our bloomin' licence fee after all??

Ironically, it's probably only ITV which would pick it up

I find the was/were thing extremely annoying as well, but then I do have to really restrain myself from shouting "pick your feet up" at the armies of teenage girls dragging their feet in their knockoff-Uggs!! It's possible I'm prematurely turning into a grumpy old woman!!

If it means a disdain for declining standards then bring on the grumpy!
