good machines though - the irritating thing is you know they are slightly overpriced for what they do - but are still so desirable to the peer group.

It depends what you want from the device. In many ways, there is nothing that can match the functionality and usability of an iTouch in its price range.
Having to buy a seperate USB charger is a bit of a pain but I think USB charging will become the standard quite soon such that most portable devices will expect you to have one to charge it with already, and not come with their own charger.
The iPhone camera is rubbish so the lack of that is no great loss to anyone. If you want to take photos, buy a camera. Mobile phones do not make good cameras, though they are adequate for throwaway snapshots.
The whole iPod range is certainly something which is certainly desirable in mnay peer-groups, and the iTouch is the top of the range (except for the iPhone which has a whole different pricing model), but I don't consider it overpriced compared with what else is on offer. It isn't cheap, but it offers a lot for what you pay for it once the App Store is taken into account (which has free apps to cover just about every requirement if you search a bit, or wait a bit for the authors of some to temporarily make them free).
