iPod touch questions

What's the difference between the 2nd gen 8gb iPod touch and the 3nd gen 8gb iPod touch (apart from firware)?

3rd gen is more powerful I think

The hardware is essentially the same in the 8GB 3rd gen as in the 2nd. It's only the 32GB and 64GB models that have been upgraded to take advantage of things like OpenGL graphics, some advanced accessibility settings and voice control.

i bought my son a 2nd gen, two weeks before the price drop. luckily it was only a £15 drop

good machines though - the irritating thing is you know they are slightly overpriced for what they do - but are still so desirable to the peer group.

eg no camera, no external charger option other than PC included.

There is no 3rd gen iTouch 8GB. It is a continuation of the availability of the 2nd gen 8GB model with the same hardware and sold with the same earphones without a microphone.

The 2nd gen iTouch can use earphones with a microphone (the same as those the 3rd gen iTouch 32GB and 64GB models are supplied with), but the 8GB iTouch being sold now is no different from that sold a year ago (except for being cheaper). The 8GB model is still the 2nd-gen model (with the latest OS installed).

It depends what you want from the device. In many ways, there is nothing that can match the functionality and usability of an iTouch in its price range.

Having to buy a seperate USB charger is a bit of a pain but I think USB charging will become the standard quite soon such that most portable devices will expect you to have one to charge it with already, and not come with their own charger.

The iPhone camera is rubbish so the lack of that is no great loss to anyone. If you want to take photos, buy a camera. Mobile phones do not make good cameras, though they are adequate for throwaway snapshots.

The whole iPod range is certainly something which is certainly desirable in mnay peer-groups, and the iTouch is the top of the range (except for the iPhone which has a whole different pricing model), but I don't consider it overpriced compared with what else is on offer. It isn't cheap, but it offers a lot for what you pay for it once the App Store is taken into account (which has free apps to cover just about every requirement if you search a bit, or wait a bit for the authors of some to temporarily make them free).

interestingly i just bought him a hifi ipod dock from richers - the cambridge IP10 (£15) - which they said wouldnt charge the Itouch - but amazingly it does

so its really nice for him to keep it charged while listening to his music

If you asked if it charges the iTouch, there's no wonder they said no.

why? i dont understand the comment?

they said it charged ipods, and 1st gen itouches, but said apple had changed 2nd gen itouches, and none of their ipod cradles would charge one.

i bought it anyway, to give my son the hifi dock facility - and was therefore pleasantly surprised when it DID actually charge a 2nd gen itouch whicxh means he doesnt have to kepp charging it from his PC

Thinking about getting one of these, was wondering if you can play divx video on them, does anyone know if they support it?

I am thinking about getting an itouch. I was wondering will it be possible to use spotify and view photos while it is connected to my tv.

It's the old iTouch vs iPod touch argument. It tends to get some people's knickers in a twist if you use the lazy version

Of course if you really want to be pedantic you should always refer to it as an [b]APPLE IPOD TOUCH/B] , but life is really too short.

Here's another (probably stupid) question. I know that the Wi-Fi connection is free with the iPhone because of the contract with O2, but how do they charge for WiFi with the iPod Touch? Or is it free?

You dont pay for a wifi over your ipod unless its a pay per use hotspot.

I just came back from a trip to the Far East and free Wi-Fi was everywhere, even in the equivalent of Roy' Rolls. I have a 2G iPod Touch and it was super. The malls had free Wi-Fi, the shops, the airports. Fantastic. Makes me think that we are living in Jurassic Park some days and then I listen to the news and know it.

Yes. Some are only designed to work with the iPhone but this is clearly stated on the App Store.
