I wonder if there will ever be a Music Of White Origin award. I guess it would cause outrage and be banned for being classed as racist.

Why does an award for music of Black origin only not fall prey to the anti racism laws. I should add that I am not racist at all but it is a question that often comes to mind when the MOBO's come round.

Surely most popular music is of black origin anyway, if we look back to the Blues or Gospel, so why do we need to seperate it out and have an award specific to Black music. Or does it just apply to modern R&B music.

It's just a name used for an awards show nobody really cares about, try not to get all outraged. When they stop letting white people attend, then start complaining.

I am neither outraged or complaining. Just intrigued as to why the organisers are allowed to get away with this when an award aimed solely at White music or musicians would probably be stopped instantly.

I agree with Refusion/vanzandtfan's post, but I wish the creators had come up with a different name, then there wouldn't be much of an issue.

The MOBO awards aren't aimed at black musicians, they're just centred around certain genres of music that tend to be more black artists than white. It's not part of the requisite.

I would agree with you, however White artists can win Mobo awards as it is down to the material you sing rather than your ethnicity. See, Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse.

However I fail to see how Lady Gaga sings music from black origin.

Its Music of Black Origin, not Music from Black Artists. Its basically the Hip Hop, RNB and Soul awards with a catchier title. Much like The Q awards is about Indie music, The Kerrang Awards about heavy metal and the Brits about....well....whatever they want to be

Plus we always have this MOWO debate every year

It's recognition that certain styles of music originated from a minority culture. As someone said, it's not about the actual colour of the performer but it's about the origin of the music, hence anyone with a certain musical style can be nominated. People could argue that some 'white' music evolved from American black soul and such (Elvis is a prime example), but hey... the MOBOs are there as another excuse for an awards show.

Things for white people (or perhaps a better term would be for the indigenous population) have, are and always will be catered for in general culture.

Country and Western, derived from Irish-Scot protestant folk music, aside from that it all "black", Blues, Jazz, Rock N Roll and basically all contemporary music. In fact, racism is particularly obvious in popular music unfortunately. There's a long a long history of Black artists being overlooked, despite their talent ... See Elvis, Rolling Stones etc ... I'm bored, do some research.

The music you listen too is of Black origin, unless your Ipod has a load of Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton Tracks on it.

I don't understand the concept of music of white origin, or music of black origin. Music is so bastardised and crossed-over now that the vast majority of music in production today would contain elements of both (and many more influences besides).

I believe that the MOBO awards should be renamed to something more relevant in 2010.

Because all the other Music awards don't recognise the talented rappers and RnB singers? Or don't know that Reggae and African music exists?

Stop whining seriously.

Just get rid of the damn thing.

No MOBO's or MOWO's. Celebrating ones race is wrong, if white people can't do it (supposedly) then nor should any other race.

We live in an Obamaniac world now where we are all 'one', so why promote the differences that keep us apart? Very wrong.

It's not a celebration of race, it's a celebration of music from Afro-Caribbean heritage. On paper, it's really no different to the Notting Hill carnival, or when BBC2 and Channel 4 have a Indian/Pakistani season of programming.

Anyone from any race can celebrate another's culture.

There are loads of White English Christians who celebrate Diwali with me, and I celebrate Christmas with them.

Even being a white, British born and bred male I don't have a problem with the MOBO awards, but I do agree it should perhaps change it's name these days. If only to stop threads like this appearing every year

There's a better case than ever for a MOWO awards given most of the artists in the charts are black white music is becoming a minority.

At least the yanks have country.

We could have MOWO awards for indie and opera acts.

Agreed the problem is the name rather the ceremony itself, it's basically the UK hip-hop, urban and soul awards but with a silly name. As far as I'm concerned all pop-music, all music in fact, is of mixed origin, always has been. That's one of the great things about music.

Given our continental cousins protection of the media, both film and music will we ever see the Music of French Origin awards?

Already exist: NME Awards, Q Magazine Awards, RPS Music Awards.

The only issue here is the use of "Black" in 'MOBO', because people feel it indicates racial preference, but the reality is it's much better than using the term "urban", because there are plenty of nominees that are nothing like urban music (for example: tribal African musicians), so the organisers just use the term "Black" instead.

This argument is petty.
