VIEWERS could be forced to pay to watch popular ITV shows such as The X Factor and Coronation Street if *telecoms giant BT is successful in a planned takeover of the country’s largest commercial broadcaster.

Senior BT executives are said to be “taking soundings” as they consider the deal. A TV source said: “A takeover is clearly being discussed at board level.”

ITV has been struggling in the face of the advertising recession, losing tens of millions of pounds in revenue from TV commercials.

i don't think i would bother with this, and imagine how much damage it could do to ITV's biggest rated shows like Corrie if this happens - bad move if it does imo

We pay over 140 pounds a year to watch television. Any more is ridiculous and they would get no viewers.

Mind you 99 percent of television programmes are tripe these days or does not suit my tastes.

This sounds very worrying to me. The point of terrestrial commercial tv is you don't pay- that's why there are adverts every 15 minutes or so. To charge to watch terrestrial commercial tv is wrong and exploitative. If ITV is losing money, I guess it's due to strong competition and their shows not appealing to enough people. Another big factor is the advertising industry in recession:

"The advertising/marketing community is going to be in not a good shape for 2009," ANA president and CEO Bob Liodice, said. "The question is: How long does that situation affect 2010? That is a hard one to project at this time." Liodice made assumption that it could be till the middle of 2010 before any drastic changes and an upturn happen in the advertising and marketing industries.

"There is no good news in this report all," said Liodice. "This is not good for advertisers, this is not good for agencies, and it is certainly not good for media." This is definitely very bad news for the television industry, which in the spring will start selling advertising inventory in what could be a less-than-stellar advance marketplace. However, it is not clear yet whether the market will support much in the way of volume and CPM increases. One executive said recently that it was likely to be flat or down for the 2009-2010 TV season.

Less money in the advertising business must have a huge negative impact on commercial tv.

It's strange how you can not own a tv, so not pay the tv licence but go online and watch BBC shows on their iplayer. Maybe that's the sort of business model ITV should adopt. ITV charge to watch their shows, you refuse to pay their subscription fees and go watch them free online instead.

I now watch all my programmes online and dont have a TV so dont pay TV licence fee. I'm sure they will close this loop hole as more and more shows are streamed live.

I wouldn't believe anything you read in the Express.

But if you do, you better get posting those Christmas cards right now as well as saving up to watch Corrie!

And don't forget there's now a simple cure for cancer! http://www.mailwatch.co.uk/wp-conten.../e15382274.jpg

I can't believe people are still buying that paper. There's more realistic news in the Daily Sport.

BT has been run by greedy gangsters for years, lining their own pockets as well as their shareholders.

They wouldnt get away with charging for watching corrie or emmerdale or indeed any other ITV programme.

Personally I think its all a wind-up anyway, just iggie it.

I am an avid viewer of Corrie, but I'm not sure I love it that much to want to pay to watch it.

I would pay to watch EE, though.

Can't say I've seen anything about this in any reputable publications. The Express is a rag in comparison.

Pay per view has to come, ITV & C5 need the money, the ad revenue isnt there anymore & so things will change. Camerons already cosied up to Murdoch for his rags support, so if Cameron wins expect the BBC to be scaled back & for ITV/C5 to be free to go down the ppv path.

Other things once taken for granted on free to air have gone to the highest bidder wins mantra , so whats the fuss over outdated space fillers like Corrie & Emmerdale, programmes that have been flogged to within an inch of the legs coming off? What do ITV show thats worth paying for?

Surely if this does happen, the ratings for all ITV's top shows would drop considerably, because a lot of these shows' regular audience would not be able to afford the cost of viewing them for various reasons, especially the elderly audience.

It would be distastrous if this does happen though, for ITV and for terrestrial TV in general.

I'm in China and pay for NOTHING........leave UK/Canada/US etc and be an expat in a country which thumbs the nose at copyright (and there are many of them........including our Scandahoovian cousins!). Or, find "other" ways.

torrents/freeweb/usenet - all there for the taking

"Forced"?? FORCED??...........ja, zeig heil.........

you really "do" have other options other than making the greedy 'fat cats' fatter.............

Technically, we pay that much just to watch BBC channels. ITV, Channel 4, etc. are free to watch because they fund themselves. But just by owning a TV, you're assumed to be watching BBC channels, and therefore have to pay for a licence, even if you never watch those channels!

Personally, I'd rather they just stuck some adverts between programmes and save me nearly £150 a year.
