Nokia N900

Has anyone here used one? What are your views? I was toying with the idea of an iPhone but am slowly turning against the idea every day as I don't have a Windows or Mac machine so it's a pain synchronising with computer, and these phones all need 'jailbreaking' to be of any real use, plus come with a massive price tag compared to other phones out there.

The N900 seems a real iPhone killer, with some things being integrated that the iPhone should have anyway, such as an FM transmitter to connect to car radio and the like, and isn't anywhere near as locked down as the iPhone. It seems ideal - a little too ideal perhaps?

The prices are far, far cheaper than the iPhone too and it seems more like I am buying some real technology rather than just buying a brand. The aggressive approach Apple's taken to controlling revenues, locking handsets down and the like is starting to feel quite wrong to me, even though when I did use an iPhone it was really nice, I am starting to think I can get far more for less money without Apple.

(Plus also I need to know if I can stream internet radio including Windows Media on this handset, such as BBC London - see my other thread, having a bit of a nightmare getting streaming audio working on a Samsung phone).

I am kind of interested in this phone as it will play loads of video formats without transcoding. I phoned the Nokia store in London, and they said they will have one in store to try in the next couple of weeks.

I dont think that they are released yet

Well i own an N97 which is very similar to the N900 apart from the operating system on it, the N97 is outstanding, and in my opinion a trillon miles better than the iPhone although a few of my mates disagree, however if your looking at gettting an N900, i expect this will be considerably way more expensive than an iPHone, soo really how much are you willing to pay, in my opinion, the extra £100-200 more it costs than the iPhone is defiantely worth it!!!

SIM free prices of the N900 and N97 are pretty much identical - £500. The iPhone generally costs a fair bit more SIM free.

They're cheaper than iPhones by quite a long shot.

As I'll be using internet radio, can you confirm if you can stream stations on the N97, and how you do it?

Probably with the same app as used on the N95, n85, etc - Nokias Internet Radio application. Works quite nicely ....

Well, the N97 is better in some ways. It's smaller and lighter. 88cc and 150g versus 113cc and 181g. I've not handled an N900, but I think it would be too big for my pocket. Many of N97s apparent flaws are actually engineering compromises. The N900 makes different ones, and what you gain on the swings you probably lose on the roundabouts.
