Mathematics Jobs In The Music Industry

Hey guys, my names Sunny, 20 years old. I am studying for a Mathematics degree at Greenwich Uni and at my final year (aiming for a 2:1). Need to start thinking about career moves for when I finish next year, but have been quite unsure and never really thought about it.

I have some ideas like accountancy, finance, banking teaching etc. But then im really passionate about music. Does anyone have any suggestions, like is there any jobs in the music industry for something finanical/mathematical, because there must be some. People always say you can do lots of things with maths because its one of the hardest degrees (I think its within the top 5 hardest degrees). But I am well unsure.

P.S. I just did some research and Maths graduates earn on average 37.5k No wonder why my teachers always say this that maths is the best field and the most well paid

I would love to do something in the music business and MATHS related too. That would just be perfect.

Please get back. Advise would be great. Sugesst anything. What other sectors do you think would be good for me? Thanks.

I heard that 3 is the magic number, if that helps.

When I worked for Decca in the 70s they had a team of accountants (in the next office to me, actually).

Not sure how the current music industry is, as most labels are part of multi-nationals.

Like any industry, the music biz needs accountants and financiers.

Though I imagine some work is outsourced to consultancies, all the record labels will have their own accounting and finance teams.

It might be worth looking up Sony BMG, Universal Music, Island Records, EMI, etc. online, look for a "Jobs" or "Careers" section, and try giving them a ring or email, enquiring about any positions available for graduates. They might have a graduate scheme, if they're a big company.

No idea. But with a Maths degree, I'd probably aim as high as possible at the beginning - perhaps training as an actuary or something. That's the sort of thing you can only do when you're young and you'll secure future in difficult economic times. If you want to do something music related later in your life or as an avocation, those doors will still be open to you.
