Who else has done it from series 2 onwards?
I used to know a couple of the pros quite well. The whole approach to the programme changed in series 2, as it became a more serious competition and the working hours went through the roof.
From then onwards they didn't even have time to think about what they would eat for dinner, let alone plan a publicity campaign or agree to set up photos. They also found the fabricated stories in the paper annoying. They worked so hard to make their celebs improve that I genuinely don't think they would have wanted them to get through for any other reason apart from their routine. I can't imagine them ever wanting to bother with the fake publicity thing - or being media savvy enough to go for it.
For me the whole "doing it for PR" accusation is a myth. Most of the time newspapers have either completely exaggerated the bond that has formed (eg entire stories based around dance partners holding hands - really? Is that really meant to prove a relationship?) or something genuine has been there.
All of the couples get tactile and hug a lot - they are with each other 8-10 hours a day. The papers just choose to report on some of them, but not others and they really hound the couples they choose to report on. (I would bet my house on Kristina being less than pleased that paparazzi were camping outside her flat) I'm sure there are pictures of Darren and Lynda walking arm in arm, they just wouldn't hit the tabloids. All couples go for coffee, but it was more "newsworthy" with Brendan and Claire. I blame the papers rather than the couples for the "showmance" stories.
