OK, here goes with a new thread for a new season.

This is the place to post any details about radio commentators and reporters on sports other than football.

I'll get the ball rolling:

Tuesday 6th October - BBC Five Live

Mark Pougatch presenting Five Live Sport from the O2 Arena

NBA Europe Live London 2009
Chicago Bulls v Utah Jazz - Darren Fletcher and John Amaechi (commentary), with Colin Murray as sideline reporter and Colin Paterson interviewing celebrities in attendance

Commentary was also taken on BBCi, with it being layered on top of TV pictures.

Personally, I feel it would have been more sensible for Five Live to have used their basketball specialists (Bob Ballard and Ron McIntosh) on this rather than football broadcasters like Pougatch and Fletcher, who appeared to be new to the sport and picking it up as they went along.

Nevertheless, it was good to hear Five Live doing something a bit different and IMO more interesting than the usual bland Premier League chat.

I was watching the game on the red button with the Five Live commentary.... I quite enjoyed it actually. They gave it a really good go.

The regular NBA commentator who was on for five minutes was a class apart though.

I was hoping to listen to the end of this after the England Under-21 game tonight, as a link to the BBC Radio Wales feed was provided on the Scrum V page.

Unfortunately, with the BBC having recently dropped all Real Player streaming, the link was a dud; and when I clicked on the station on the IPlayer I got the "Sorry, this event is not available" audio loop rather than commentary.

Anyone know what's going on? I was under the impression the BBC were allowed to stream audio commentaries on the Heineken Cup, as they have done in past seasons. I hope it was just a technical fault/error.

The England Local Radio streams have all changed to Flash/Windows Media but the Radio Wales streams haven't/don't seem to have changed yet.

Overall though, the whole online streaming of sport seems to be in a complete mess since they switched from Real to Windows Media player. Hope they fix it all soon. Some work, some don't

Sunday 11th October - BBC Radio Leicester

Martin Ballard presenting Sportstime from Welford Road

Heineken Cup Pool 3
Leicester Tigers v Ospreys - Bleddyn Jones and Steve Johnson (commentary), with Martin Ballard adding occasional analysis

(Llanelli) Scarlets V CA Brive Limousin (Heineken Cup Pool 6)

BBC Radio Wales - Nick Webb and Phil Bennett (AM / online)
According to Ian Fergus in the radio football commentators thread, Rick O'Shea's Scrum V Live Fanscene deputy Pete Shepherd was BBC Five Live's reporter at Parc y Sgarlets yesterday.

Interesting to hear Radio Wales' commentary on the Scarlets v Brive game was streamed online, were you in a position to hear any of it online or was that just how it was advertised on FM/AM (and so might not have been the case in practice)?

I ask this as for today's Leicester v Ospreys match, I went to listen to Radio Wales' commentary online but was met with the same "sorry, this event is not available" looped message I was faced with on Friday night.

However, BBC Five Live and BBC Radio Leicester's commentary was being streamed, so I imagine this is just an issue with whoever is controlling the Radio Wales streaming.

I'm glad I went with Radio Leicester in the end - it was the first time I've heard Bleddyn Jones and already I think he is a fantastic commentator.

IMO he would not sound out of place on Scrum V or Five Live's rugby union coverage.

Bleddyn has been great on Radio Leicester for a number of years and recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Gillard Awards dinner in Nottingham earlier this week

The trio of Ballard, who normally presents Sportstime at the weekend, with Jones and Johnson on their rugby coverage is excellent. They do it justice.

I was listening to Radio Cymru for most of yesterday, but would occasionally dip in to Radio Wales AM to see how the game was progressing. I've no idea about whether or not the Online facility would work

Of course he is, he's Welsh

.....

But in all seriousness, he does have a strong West Walian accent, so would the producers at Five Live think the UK would be ready for that strong a Welsh voice.

Who was the last true Welshman on national BBC radio then, anyone?

Sorry for that mistake, and thanks for the correction.

As you know I was listening to BBC Radio Leicester, although I did check the BBC Five Live 'Listen Live' popout (to check if they were streaming commentary), and on it Austin's name was listed as part of the commentary team. Didn't stick around to check if he was actually there!

However, I'm pretty sure I heard Bleddyn Jones say he could see Austin Healey from where he was sitting in the press box. So maybe he was there, just not working for Five Live.

But in all seriousness, he (Bleddyn Jones) does have a strong West Walian accent, so would the producers at Five Live think the UK would be ready for that strong a Welsh voice.
Why not?

IMO he has a great commentary voice, and while his accent is obviously West Walian it isn't harsh to listen to as some I'm heard from that part of the world can be.

Clearly the people of Leicestershire don't have a problem with hearing a Welsh voice on their local rugby coverage, so why would the rest of the UK?

Without meaning to go off on a "BBC bashing rant" here (or indeed a rant at you Ian!) - as we are on the subject, I think it's pretty poor and strange that Five Live don't have a Welsh commentary (as opposed to summarising) voice on their rugby union coverage.

Five Live must have an 8-10 strong roster of rugby union commentators, and have Scottish, English and Irish representation, but not one commentator from Wales - despite the sport being most popular in the Welsh part of the UK.

Now that Alistair Hignell has retired, I reckon Bleddyn (or someone like him) would be a welcome addition to Five Live's rugby coverage at Six Nations time (when BBC Radio Leicester could live without his services).

Who was the last true Welshman on national BBC radio then, anyone?
Well I like Ian Brown (the football commentator that is, not the singer - although I'm a fan of his work too! ), who's one of my favourite commentators on Five Live.

Would you count him as a "true Welshman" Ian?

I'm pretty sure he's from the principality, even though he doesn't sound like Windsor Davies!

I would imagine that BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra will take the Westwood One commentary of New England at Denver.
Indeed they are:

Sunday 11th October - BBC Five Live Sports Extra

Arlo White presenting NFL on Five Live Sports Extra with Neil Reynolds

NFL Regular Season - Week 5
New England Patriots @ Denver Broncos - Kevin Kugler and Mark Malone (commentary provided by Westwood One)

Neil Reynolds is providing off-tube updates on the three other games (Atlanta Falcons @ San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans @ Arizona Cardinals and Jacksonville Jaguars @ Seattle Seahawks) which are also taking place during the broadcast, with this service being complimented by clips from the American radio commentaries on them being played during the studio segments

Seeing as Ian Fergus has begun posting the national American radio commentators for the weekly NFL fixtures, I'll do the same for Major League Baseball's postseason.

ESPN Radio

One-Game Playoff

Detroit Tigers @ Minnesota Twins - Dan Schulman and Dave Campbell

American League Division Series

Boston Red Sox v Los Angeles Angels - Dan Schulman and Dave Campbell
Minnesota Twins v New York Yankees - Jon Miller and Steve Phillips

National League Division Series

Colorado Rockies v Philadelphia Phillies - Chris Berman and Rick Sutcliffe (game 1 and 2), Gary Thorne and Chris Singleton (game 3 and 4)
St. Louis Cardinals v Los Angeles Dodgers - Jon Sciambi and Aaron Boone

American League Championship Series

Los Angeles Angels v New York Yankees - Jon Miller and Joe Morgan

National League Championship Series

Philadelphia Phillies v Los Angeles Dodgers - Dan Schulman and Dave Campbell

World Series

American League Champions v National League Champions - Jon Miller and Joe Morgan

ESPN Radio's studio team for the World Series will be Jon Sciambi presenting alongside Dave Campbell and Peter Pascarelli. Joe D'Ambrosio is their host for ALDS, NLDS, ALCS and NLCS games.

Fans of the much-missed MLB on Five will recognise ESPN Radio's top team of Jon and Joe as ESPN TV's long-standing Sunday Night Baseball commentary team.

I'm surprised to see them working as a pair on the Play-Offs, as since MLB on Five left our screens, on TV this season Steve Phillips has been added to the SNB broadcast booth. There had been talk that he'd join them for radio coverage of the World Series.

An update on this (thanks for the info last week Andy) - tonight both the BBC Radio Wales Heineken Cup commentaries, Newport Gwent Dragons v Glasgow Warriors and Sale Sharks v Cardiff Blues, are available via the page linked to above through Real Media Player streaming - however the "this programme is unavailable" loop, rather than either commentary, is playing via the normal IPlayer BBC Radio Wales feed.

Happily, they have sorted things out this week - plus it shows it's not the last we've seen of Real Player streaming on the BBC Sport website.

I'm not sure how they block commentaries out to those abroad but the Heineken Cup games are all "UK Only" for some bizarre reason I don't understand so I guess that is why the main feed is blocked.
