Sunday 18th October
BBC Five Live Ronald McIntosh presenting Five Live Boxing from the Trent FM Arena, as part of Up All Night with Dotun Adebayo WBC Super Middleweight Championship - Super Six World Boxing Classic Carl Froch v Andre Dirrell - Mike Costello and Spencer Oliver (commentary) BBC Radio Nottingham Robin Chipperfield presenting Fight Night from the Trent FM Arena WBC Super Middleweight Championship - Super Six World Boxing Classic Carl Froch v Andre Dirrell - Colin Fray and Robin Chipperfield (commentary) Relying on the BBC radio commentaries this morning as the big fight is on some obscure start-up PPV channel. ![]() Unsurprisingly, both stations are calling the venue the Nottingham Arena rather than by its proper name! ![]() Come on The Cobra!

BBC Radio 5 Live - Roger Hughes Maybe it's not just me who's noticed Five Live need more Welsh representation in their rugby union commentary team! |

BBC Bristol / Somerset - Dan Albutt (studio host) Andrew Sheridan and Mike Tremlitt It was meant to be Olly Barklay as summarisier, but he has 'man flu'. 5LSX went with Nick Mullins and Jeremy Guscott, and Alistair Eykyn updating for R5L (Alison Mitchell was updating listeners from the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in London) Quote:
Would this be the same Roger Hughes who was a BBC Radio Wales football commentator a few seasons back, and is now talkSPORT's South Wales football reporter?

Indeed it was.
I have mixed feelings about this - on one hand it's good to see Five Live having more Welsh representation than just Robert Jones and others borrowed from Radio Wales on their rugby union coverage, on the other I hope this doesn't mean it's the last we've heard of Roger on talkSPORT, as I enjoy his contributions to their football coverage and not having a dedicated Welsh reporter would be a loss for the station. |

A couple of observations about this weekend's radio sports coverage - one positive, one less so.
I really enjoyed hearing Tony Jardine used as a studio pundit on the Formula 1 for talkSPORT's excellent Football First on Sunday. I'm not a big F1 fan but watch it from time to time (although I find the radio commentary a little overpowering due to the sheer noise of the engines!). As I was out on Sunday, I followed the race on the radio and hearing Tony's considered insight was superb. I used to like him on ITV's coverage and thought it was a shame when he took off to join the Sky Sports A1 Grand Prix team. With Jenson Button having now won the Drivers Championship, I think it's unlikely talkSPORT will make a big deal of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (the only remaining GP this season), but after Sunday's successful trial I hope talkSPORT call upon Jardine as their F1 studio pundit whenever he's available next year. One sports broadcaster who didn't impress me this weekend was Five Live boxing commentator Mike Costello. I want to like him but he just doesn't cut it for me and I would much prefer to hear Simon Brotherton, Ron McIntosh or even David Croft used on Five Live Boxing instead of him. I find his style quite strained, he always seems to extenuate that the British boxer is struggling and sounds panicked when he does this. Admittedly I was drifting in and out of consensuses when I was listening (well, it was after 3am in the morning!) but the later the fight went, the more he sounded convinced that Froch had lost it on points. When the judge's decision came in, he soon changed his tune. Not the first time I've been unimpressed by one of his commentaries - IMO he's nowhere near the same class as his excellent predecessors as Five Live's boxing commentator, Ian Darke and John Rawling. |

That was the original choice but the game was moved forward to an early kick off, I think to avoid a clash with Philadelphia in the World Series so they had to pick again.
Just checked and Giants - Eagles is being played now. |
