Which make of knives for a non professional ?
Hi all,
Even tho I have had years of experience of catering, I am in no way a pro but would like to improve on my cooking skills. I have decided that it is hightime that I should get myself some proper knives for seperating chickens & taking fish off the bone amongst other things. Can anyone here suggest a not too expensive brand of knives that will do what I want without making too much mess of the product I am cutting ?. Many thanks DJM |

I have a Victorinox knife which is really good (my dad gave it me when I moved out). He also has a lot of them and says they're good. He used to be a chef so i'll trust him...and ask him to sharpen them for me every so often

I saw a programme once on kitchen knives and the three chefs they talked to surprisingly recommended some cheaper brands over the more expensive.
When I was looking for a set myself the criteria was: - stainless high carbon steel blades - non-slip handles - reasonably priced I eventually bought a block set of the Master Class Trojan range and added individually a Japanese Cook's knife, a few others from the range and duplicates of the most often used pairing and utility knives. |

We bought some Global knives a while ago because they were the 'prestige' choice, and I hate them! They are also ugly!
Now got a mix of some cheap Victorinox ones and a block of Alessi ones. They key is keeping them sharp! |

I recently bought a knife block with 5 knives in it, by the brand Master Class. It was only £34.95, which is so much cheaper than most of the other knife blocks I found. But they seem good to me. Even the woman in the shop was surprised at the price - she told me the £35 was just for the block without the knives, but in fact it did include the knives!!
