Assuming you are talking about SD programmimg the process goes like this.

Convert the transmission stream mpeg2 .ts file to a programme stream mpeg2 .mpg file.

Burn the .mpg file to a dvd using a dvd authoring package.

There are so many ways of doing both some free it's hard to say which is the best free way.

However if you want to do the lot in a fast user friendly single progamme it's doubtfull if you can do better than buying Videredo TV Suite. You can try this for free.

@Graham

Can you de-confuse me please. I copy live TV to DVD straight through the Foxsat. And if I need to record to DVD a program that is already on the HDD I just play it and record direct TV. Am I missing something here?

Thanks

Robert

Yes, if you record a dvd in real time from the hdr you are losing a lot of the original quality not to mention how long it takes. The process basically goes like this. The raw mpeg2 data from the the hdd or live broadcast is turned into a pal 25 frame per second 576i analogue video stream using the hdr's mpeg decoder. This analogue stream is input to your DVD recorder ( the best quality available is RGB which if your dvd recorder supports it has to be connected to the hdr TV scart not the vcr scart) where it has to have two conversions, first the analogue stream has to converted back to digital using the recorders analogue to digital converter, secondly the digital data has to be re-encoded to mpeg2 in real time to burn to dvd. That's 3 uneccessary conversions, the hard disc mpeg2 transport stream data can be copied in it's original digital format to a usb device. When this drive is connected to a PC the mpeg2 transport stream can be converted in a lossless conversion without re-encoding to a programme stream file. This process takes only a few minutes using conversion software like videoredo plus. DVD authoring software can then burn this data to a dvd blank much faster than real time (8 x is common). Result a DVD with no quality loss and in a fraction of the time required for a dvd recorder.

Additionally doing it this way means you can easily edit out commercial breaks and create your own menus and chapter points.

Graham, Thank you

I did not realise that there was such a loss in quality. I'll try the other way as an experiment and see what the percievable diffence is.

Thanks again

See "Making DVDs with ProjectX and Nero (Windows)"
on http://www.toppy.org.uk/documents/index.php?catid=2

You don't have to use Nero and you may have to adapt the procedure slightly because of the different source

Does anybody know if the trial version of VideoReDo is limited to small files. After Grahams reply yesterday, I decided to have a go at burning a DVD using the free trial version of VideoReDo.

I copied a 1 hour Blue Murder program from the Foxsat and downloaded it to the PC (fine so far) Using VideoReDo, I then tried to remove the ads and then burn the whole program to DVD.

It seems to work well, but only about 20 minutes was recorded to DVD - Is this due to a limitation of the trial version. I can find no mention of this anywhere.

Any help appreciated

Thanks

Robert

Open the mpeg file in vlc player and check it's all there. Suspect you may have selected the wrong option in redo and accidentally chopped off the end.

@Grahamlthompson. Thank you again

The trail version, I have just discovered, is limited to about 15 mins. I think if I go further and download the key the restrictions will be removed. I'll give it a try.

That's right. You then have two weeks or whatever it is of full functionality.

H264 editing is coming this month, they tell us.
