Anyone know what the difference is?

The recipe appears to be the same. Could the americans call them cup cakes and we fairy cakes? But notice we seem to be calling them cup cakes too.

Anyone?

Cupcakes tend to be slightly bigger.
Here, we tend to use icing (icing sugar, water), but on cupcakes they use tend to use swirls of coloured buttercream. A lot of it.
Cupcakes look nicer too, and you can be more inventive with the decorations.

The actual cakes are no different though, it's just a different name for them. I thought the name cupcakes in America comes from the way all the ingredients were measured, in cups.

You can use the standard cake mix for vanilla cupcakes (1 egg for every 2 ounces), but I tend to use the Mgnolia bakery recipe which is a bit different. The cupcakes tend to be a bit more dense than the usual sponge cake.

In the tv programme "Flash Forward" one of the characters was an owner of a shop that sold cup cakes and they were twice the size of ours with toppings of every description. They looked very good but the cup cakes I remember here were chocolate cake with a chocolate icing on top about two to three inches in diameter and one inch deep. Lyons used to make them and each box had four cakes in them.
Fairy cakes are small light almost fluffy things sometimes with raisons in.

They look lovely!
Where did you get the cases? I've been looking for plain cupcake cases for ages. I could only find ones with patterns on.
