iPod Help!
Hi, i got an ipod of someone but it didn't have any software with it. So i downloaded what i think is the software for it. I ran it and it deleted everything off the ipod. Now when i turn the ipod on it has a exclamation mark inside a triangle and nothing else.
When i run the software again it says 'Firmware update failure. Disk write error'. Can someone please help me as i don't know what to do! If that wasn't the correct software then can you tell me what is. Thanks Alot! |

What I think you meant by no software coming with the machine was there was no software to transfer the songs onto the iPod with. I assume you have typed in 'iPod software' or similar into a search engine, and instead of getting the software to transfer the songs, you have inadvertently got an update to the operting system software in the iPod.
Sorry, I can't help you fix the problem, but an iPod owner on here should be able to point you in the right direction for some replacement firmware. Gdb

iPod firmware can be found at http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ and it's important to choose the right version - 1.3 for the earliers ones with a mechanical scroll-wheel, and 2.1 (for a Mac, 2.0.1 for a PC) if it's one of the newer ones that has the 'dock' connector & a touch-sensitive buttons.
There's an option to update or restore, try restore although it sounds like you've tried something like that already. If it's got the wrong version of software on, and you can't use the software as the computer doesn't reckognise it then put it into disk mode: Plug the iPod Power Adapter into an electrical outlet and connect iPod to the power adapter. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.) Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears. This resets iPod. When you reset iPod all your music and data files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost. When the Apple logo appears, immediately press and hold the Previous and Next buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears. (For iPod Software 1.0 through 1.1, a FireWire logo appears on the screen.) Disconnect iPod from the power adapter and connect it to your computer. Then try a restore again if your computer recognises the iPod on the finder or in My Computer. Let us know how you get on, but if this doesn't work then you'd best get intouch with Apple... Rgds, Ric

Hi, thanks, i think i got it to work... there is now the software stuff on the iPod...
BUT... there is no music on it any more (am adding some now) but it says there is 6GB taken up already... even before i started transfering the music. It says that there is about 12.5 GB (out of 20) left and i only have about 9 songs on at the moment. Any ideas as to what's up?? Thanks Alot |

If you're using a Mac, you can open Disk Utility & check over the iPod. I guess you can do something similar using Windows Checkdisk or Norton Disk Doctor? Sounds like the drive got corrupt, and once checked should release the space.

Hi again.... just to make sure...
Do I right click on the drive in My Computer, then click on properties, then tools, the 'Check Now'? or 'Defrag Now'? Thanks. |

There's your problem
At the end of the day, you've still got plenty of space for loads of tunes, but the extra space would be handy. Maybe a PC iPod user can suggest something to help?Rgds, Ric

Go for "check now" which should do what you want. No need (AFAIK!) to defragment an iPod, unless you're using it mostly as a hard-drive.
