Do you have a favourite wine or type of wine? Recently, out of the blue, I took to drinking lager, then I went to canned cider and back to lager again, but it defeats the purpose of my trying to get/stay fit, so now I've taken to wine, purely just to relax at night.

I think my ideal wine, with all foods and moods is always '9' sweet white. I do not like red whine at all. It gives me headaches, and it gives everyone bad breath and black lips/teeth.

I'm sure it was on a program the other day that wine is just as bad, or even worse, for your diet.

Really? Do you have any more info? I'm not on a 'diet' but I don't want a beer belly, and that's why I don't want to drink any old thing. I'll drink spirits neat, but I don't want to drink to get drunk, nor to I want liver poisoning.

Here is an article on the subject. It's nothing to do with what I saw but may have the same info. It's all to do with calories.

I can't remember the show but it may have been Market Kitchen or Taste (jeez i watch some crap in the early mornings ).

Thanks for that. I won't read it now, but I will later.

I would think sweet wine would contain more sugar calories than an equivalent amount of beer.
If you really want to save on calories drink small glasses of dry champagne which has the least. Red wine will only give you a headache if you drink the cheap stuff !
Calorie wise a white wine spritzer or a single measure spirit with a lo cal mixer is best. The latter only has 60 calories.

Fat contains 9 calories per gram

Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram

Carbohydrate (Starch & Sugar) contains 4 calories per gram

- so better to drink a low alcohol sweet drink, than a high alcohol dry one ???

I have a couple of theories about the headache/red wine association - one is that it is alcohol that causes the headache due to dehydration - what colour it comes wrapped in doesn't matter?

- another theory is that it is the 'sulphite' in wine that causes headaches - this may be present in larger quantities in red wine??

This is my favourite wine ever despite the 'Merlot' in my username.

Yes, red wine can dehydrate you but isn't that true of all alcohol? I tend to match each glass of wine with a small glass of water to prevent hangovers.

Re. sulphites-many people are allergic to them hence the pounding headaches, etc. But they're not exclusive to wines.

And yes, all alcohol is calorific, but a bit of what you fancy and all that.

Nothing comes between me and my NZ Sauvignon Blanc! Villa Maria, Oyster Bay, anything from the Marlborough Estate, it's all good.
I did find a very good Californian Sauvignon though, Kim Crawford, now that was nice!

Do people really still drink sweet wine? I find you don't even have to ask for dry wine any more at most places.

Any St Emillion for me please. If I'm skint, a bottle of rioja (red) and I'm a happy girl.
