Contemporary, progressive & crossover female vocalists

I found a US-based site tonight which some might find interesting. It's called Musical Discoveries, and its mission is to "actively follow and promote contemporary, progressive and crossover music featuring female vocalists by reviewing albums and live performances, interviewing artists and by publishing comprehensive features spanning their careers".

Nice to see both Mostly Autumn and Karnataka get a mention. If you haven't checked them out already, I strongly recommend you do. They are both symphonic rock/folk/prog crossover groups fronted by exquisite female vocalists. You'll find samples at http://www.mostly-autumn.com/ and http://www.karnataka.34sp.com/

It was also good to see news of Moya Brennan's latest album.

I must confess that all in all, I'm finally becoming a fan of the female vocalist. This is largely thanks to the aforementioned groups, Mostly Autumn and Karnataka. Also, all the hype surrounding Norah Jones, Katie Melua and Amy Winehouse has been jusitified in my opinion as I have albums by all three and they are absolutely superb !

Hi Megson, thanks for your reply - the recommendations are much appreciated! - and I'm sorry about the long delay in responding. I've put Mostly Autumn's and Karnataka's samples on my downloads queue but I still haven't had time to get them yet. Will be back in a week or two when I've had a listen.

I've not heard any of Máire Brennan's recent music but I'll be interested to look at that too. Her voice is gorgeous but I'd lost interest in the music she was doing with Clannad quite a while ago, and haven't heard any of her solo stuff. Clannad's early trad folk and crossover albums were their best work for me... after they went further over to new age/Celtic pop, round the late 80s, I lost interest.

I'm a bit gobsmacked by your comment about finally becoming a fan of the female vocalist!! I've always liked both male and female singers. There's such an incredible range of female voices that it's hard to see how none of them could be appealing. But anyway it's good to hear that you're finally coming around to liking some of them.

Ooh, thanks Ruby, my fav girlie (classical) singer Hayley Westenra is in there too. She's about as crossover as you can get, what with a pop single out in 3 weeks time - Wuthering Heights!!!

Can't wait to find out who ends up with the most success and money - her or Charlotte Church . My bet is on Hayley - but give her a few years - she's a late starter (and 14 months younger lol)

That's a great site you found!

Thanks for the response Ruby. Perhaps my comment about female vocalists suggested I didn't like any until recently. It's not quite as black and white as that - there's plenty of grey in there Sorry if I gave that impression. What I meant was simply the vast majority of the music I listen to is either led by a male vocalist or instrumental. I have been a fan of the likes of Renaissance (Annie Haslam), Maddy Prior (guest vocalist on Incantations - Mike Oldfield), Maggie Reilly (Vocalist on eighties Oldfield output), Kate Bush and The Corrs before I became familiar with the promising releases of this latest wave of female contempory talent.
