Matsui M22DVDB19 5 dead pixels!

Just some info on this model.
It's a 22inch freeview LCD TV with integrated DVD player and some DVR functions (when you plug in a usb drive or external HDD). £199 @ PC WORLD
Bought it 9th Oct, got it home + set it up. Immediately noticed one bright spot near the screen centre (from 8 ft away). Moved closer and noticed another, then closer again and there were 2 more plus one blue spot.

So 5 dead 'always on' pixels, 4 white and one blue one.
Left it on for 3 hours, but the faults remained.

So it's going back to them soon for a replacement.
Shame as in almost all other respects its a fanatastic little LCDTV.
Picture is excellent for it's intended use (bedroom). Menus and resposivness are very good
Only other issues are minimum volume is a bit high and the front panel LED is a bit laser like.

5 dead pixels though is outrageous.

Fingers crossed that the replacement is ok. I'll report back later
Anyone else had any issues with this model?

Sorry, but it's a Matsui, what did you expect?.

If you're particularly wanting a TV/DVD combi (and I would seriously advise against it) you really don't have much choice, I suspect they all come out of the same junk factory, no matter what the name on the front. Matsui is Dixon's own brand name they put on the cheapest junk they can find.

At the price I suspect it's not beyond the realms of possibiliy that the (1366x768) panels Matsui fit are effectively 'factory rejects' that no other manufacturer would use...I hope that ain't so, but it would keep the price down.
But as there is no 'Low Quality Panel' sticker on the product, I think I should expect the goods to be of acceptable quality.
Maybe on this occasion I've just been unlucky.

The rest of the electronics seem fine.
I'll see what the replacement is like

Matsui don't fit anything, it's not a manufacfturer, it's just a name Dixon's use on cheap gear they buy in.

The sets will be made in China or somewhere, Orion, Vestel, some sort of cheap thing.

Grunt.. Not happy.
Nice chap at PC World replaced the set without a quibble.

Replacment has one very bright dead pixel towards the bottom of the screen.

Now what...?!

One dead pixel maybe deemed 'acceptable'. But it's a faulty panel to me, and if I ever sell the set, this fault will make it next to worthless.

Take it back and demand your money back, then put some more towards it and buy a decent TV.

Don't buy one with DVD, they are all the same rubbish.

Buy a better brand like Samsung or Sony, and yes TV/DVD combi's aren't very good. I had a Matsui VCR back in the day and they were crap!!!

Got one without dead pixels!

This aft went back to the shop. Again staff very helpful and understanding.
Anyway rather than try another new one, carefully checked out their display model..which had no dead pixels, so I've got that one now. Not an ideal solution, but one I'm happy with at the moment.
Time to check out if everything else works including USB PVR functions + DVD player.

Finally got round to checking out PVR functionality.

Pretty good!

Used Maxtor 2.5" 80GB HDD formatted to FAT32.

First worry was if the TV had enough USB current to spin it up..Well it passed that test ok (surprising).

Then used EPG to do a recording. That worked fine and recorded the program as a *.ts file which can then be played on any PC (use VLC to play it).

After setting recording, you can put TV into standby. The TV then comes out of standby, displays the picture but mutes the sound, completes recording then goes back into standby.

Not bad.

Only 2 issues now..how to turn down the backlight..It's way too bright, and the volume min is also too loud..where's my screwdriver..!

All flat panels have a tolerable level of pixel failure before it is deemed faulty. Only Class 1 (which is reserved for mission critical and military usage) guarantees no dead pixels.

Personally, I think you're lucky that PC World didn't send you out with this knowledge.

Yes and Yes, I've come across the standards before and re-researched them before rejecting the set. The first set was in breach of classII, the second one probably wasn't.

In future after this experience I'll make my own contract condition that I cannot tolerate any dead pixels.

PCWorld were very good on this, my argument was that a set with such obvious panel problems has a massively reduced second-hand value, which means the goods are not of 'acceptable quality'. They agreed totally.

On the subject of dead pixels I suppose the same classifications apply to digital camera sensors..recently tested my trusty 5 year old Minolta..It's got loads of dead pixels..still takes good pictures though.

As a Sony repair agent, I replace any panel the customer complains of - Sony are a premium product and the leading brand, in my opinion it should have NO duff pixels.

I've never had any problems with the warranty claims, Sony happily pay them - and all panels are returned to be checked.

With Matsui you could hardly claim it's a 'premium' product though.

Bang and Olufsen are possible the only brand I know that will guarantee zero stuck or dead pixels.

Slightly more expensive though!

I've bought one of these Matsui tvs for my son for xmas and have checked it out to make sure it works ok. I made a short recording onto a usb stick that played back in the tv ok. I have tried to playback using VLC on my pc but to no avail. Is there any way the recordings can be played back in WMP. The file format is a .TS file but just won't play. Any advice would be much appreciated.
