Come Dancing was the old tv show where professionals competed at ballroom dancing.

Quote:
“Come Dancing was a BBC TV ballroom dancing competition show that ran on and off from 1949 to 1998, becoming one of television's longest-running shows.”

Strictly Ballroom was a 1992 film:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105488/

Quote:
“Scott Hastings is a champion caliber ballroom dancer, but much to the chagrin of the Australian ballroom dance community, Scott believes in dancing "his own steps". Fran is a beginning dancer and a bit of an ugly duckly who has the audacity to ask to be Scott's partner after his unorthodox style causes his regular partner to dance out of his life. Together, these two misfits try to win the Australian Pan Pacific Championships and show the Ballroom Confederation that they are wrong when they say, "there are no new steps!""”

So the two titles were merged to get Strictly Come Dancing.

Amazing, huh!

Well the American version is called 'Dancing with the Stars'

Not as if any of the UK contestants are 'stars' - mostly soap stars.

I guess the name was to give dancing a bit of a hip edge, as Come dancing had a seriously naff image towards the end of its run...

Strictly Ballroom, is also a bit of a wacky "cult" film, so I guess evoking it brings up the idea that this isnt the stiff, boring Come Dancing of old. Its younger and a bit groovier...

You're welcome.

It's possible SCD decided to keep the words 'Come Dancing' to attract older viewers of the original show. Older fans of Come Dancing would see or hear the words Strictly Come Dancing when the show was being promoted and make some connection with the old show Come Dancing. It probably helped get older Come Dancing viewers to watch the new show.

The working title for the show was "Pro-Celebrity Come Dancing" (catchy huh?). The Strictly bit was added to try to encourage younger viewers.

Japan actually spell out what's going on, too. The full title is "Shall We Dance? - All Star Ballroom Dancing Championship"

I just wish people would stop calling it 'Strictly'.
Sounds so silly, like calling X-Factor 'X' or BGT 'Britain's'

It's what everyone calls it. Even in the BBC. What name would you prefer?
