Amy Winehouse - Waste of time
Magic Girl
11-10-2009
It was a waste of time having Amy Winehiuse on the show. The producers obviously had the carrot of a live performance dangled in front of them and they bit. She was an irrelevance, could have been any competent backing singer, and instead we had a 13 yr old unknown singing on a prime time TV show. She was competent, but that's all, have heard lots as good if not better at that age. We expect a great, well known perfromer on Strictly, not an amateur, and were let down. The producers were had, and so were we the audience. Can't blame Winehouse herself for the nepotism (or the girls' mother who must be desparate for her daughter to "make it") but we can blame the show.

What's next? Robbie Williams cleaner? (because the real thing is on the other chanel?)

I haven't seen this yet, though I've heard that it is her god-daughter singing and Amy's doing backing vocals...

Amy was only ever going to sing backing vocals as she does on the actual track. She performed with her to give support to her goddaughter who was making her mainstream TV debut.

I thought the performance was great.
I think they used Wino, to draw in viewers, and it can't do any harm to help the young girls career- who I though was great and I enjoyed watching her.

I didnt really see the point in that 13 year old girl singing. All she did was keep repeating the same lyrics over and over again! And so what if AW is her godmother...who cares? Amy looked like she was gonna collapse throughout the whole song, along with her mouthing the words and wailing her hands up and down!

Complete turn off

Precisely, it was never billed as anything else.

I loved Dionne, thought she had a great voice and I love the song, very catchy.

The only criticism I have is that she needs to develop her own style - her mannerisms and singing style were too much like Amy, but she's only 13 so she has plenty of time to develop,

Didn't have anything against the young girl, but I thought it was not the right showcase for her - Strictly always has established successful acts. She was OK - I have heard better 13 yr olds, and much worse - but IMO this was precedent that should not have been set. She was there because of her godmother, NOT her talent (otherwise why weren't there auditions for unknown singeres to have ago at getting on the show?). I guess we all know nepotism is rampant in show business, but last night it was just soooo obvious.

Amy Winehouse is one of the most successful female British singers of all time and just two years ago had the highest-selling record of the year (2007) and won 5 Grammy awards. Last night, she flexed a little muscle and got her "god-daughter" a spot on Strictly and proved that she is the same compelling train wreck as a backing singer as she is when she sings lead. I loved the unsynchronised hand gestures and rolling her eyes so far back in her head she looked like she was mentally hanging herself.

As for the little girl, she was all right. We might hear from her again in four or five years.

Or more likely, we won't.

Such kids coming out of the thousands now of stage and singing schools are ten a penny.

It was a cover of quite a famous song - can anyone remember who sung the original version???

They have been playing it on Radio 2 an awful lot. I imagine we'll hear more of her.

The Shirelles, I think?

Oh, I thought the title was referring to the fact that la Wino is just so generally awful. I had switched over by then anyway.

I simply do not understand why people like her and her screeching. But I like Mozart so I suppose I could be accused of lacking taste myself (at least I seem to be in the minority these days so I must be wrong).

There you go.
Not a song for a thirteen-year-old, in my opinion.

As a live performance I thought she was great .. I've seen more well known artistes struggling to keep in tune on Strictly and she did it effortlessly ... no mean feat considering it was her debut TV appearance.

As for the content .. she was singing a love song .. Michael Jackson was singing this sort of stuff at eight and no-one thought it inappropriate ... she didn't write it, it's a cover of an old song .. and we all sang along to songs when we were kids .. regardless of the lyrics .. if she had sang stuff like Madonna's 'Justify My Love' that would have been a different matter.

I don't like Amy Winehouse at all but I thought it was a nice thing for her to do for her god-daughter.

I just choked on my coffee at the sudden thought of Anton doing the pro dance to "Justify My Love".

The Shirelles were only a few years older than Dionne when they had a hit with this song. They were a group of young girls from New Jersey who first got together in High School about 1958 and they had a hit with this song in 1962.

Err.. Actually you're wrong.

They "got together" between the ages of sixteen and eighteen.

These girls were all born between 1940 and 1942, so they would have been between twenty and twenty-two in 1962.

Aww, Doghouse. C'mon. I did say they were a few years older than Dionne. But I do have to admit I thought they were more like 15ish when they got together originally and about 19ish when they made the record of this song...so you are right and I am wrong. But whats 18 months to 3 years between friends?

And that should interest us why?? I know it's an old chestnut, but the BBC is funded by the license fee, so why should the viewing public subsidise a down on her luck singer "doing something nice" for her god-daughter? It beggars belief. If Tess Dailey asks if her niece can come in and do a turn, or Dave Arch asks if his nephew can come in< what would the reaction be? Nepotism goes on, but it is wrong and should not be encouraged.

I'm not into "right or wrong."
I just thought it was an unsuitable song and a choice of dress for a thirteen-year-old.
There are many restrictions on kids of this age as far a performing. Why not let her develop a bit more?

There was no reason to "showcase" her this early, other than to try to improve "Wineo's" image, which for me is impossible.

I've just randomly heard Dionne sing another, more challenging song. Blimey - she's nowhere near average. She's got an incredible voice. Especially for a 13 yr old.
