“political blog 'pickled politics' on der berks so-called 'apology'...

...others have argued that Anton Du Beke should not be sacked, because he apologised for the use of ‘P**i’, and because it wasn’t meant in a malicious way. I have some sympathy for the latter, but what most people seem to have missed is that Mr. Du Beke did not apologise. He issued a non-apology.

A non-apology is a device that came to prominence during the Blair years, when a minister or senior Labour figure had to resign. The non-apology does not contain any actual apology for the person’s behaviour, but rather expresses regret that others have been offended. Thus, as Peter Oborne put it, we were treated to the surreal sight of people resigning while confessing that they had done nothing wrong.

Let’s examine Mr. Du Beke’s words:

“I do not use racist language.”

i.e. I did nothing wrong, and ‘P**i’ is not racist.

“I apologise unreservedly for any offence my actions might have caused.”

i.e. I’m sorry other people were offended.

Note that there is no actual apology for saying ‘P**i’, merely an apology that others are offended by such language.

47 here.
SO offensive.
I don't know if I ever used the word as a child but I'd erased it from my vocabulary by the time I took my O levels.

I don't want Anton sacked - he looked shattered on ITT and his on screen apology contained none of the 'justification' of the statement, but let's face it, words like that don't just slip out if they're not words you'd use in the first place.

Anyone over 40 would not think it was so offensive. Rude - yes - offensive no. I am sure Anton does not think it a joke now. He has apologised unreservedly and appears truly sorry for what he said. I do hope that this country is not so "politically correct" that it cannot accept some-one's apology. It really would be chilling if people cannot draw a line under this sorry debacle. He said he was sorry on national television and admitted he was stupid. Move on - end of.”

I've stayed out of this debate before but had to join in, as another over 40 who thinks that word is offensive and is insulted that someone would think that I wouldn't.

He's an absolute idiot for using that word and it's not one that I would have dreamed of using and it has probably damaged his career.

I also believed his apology and Laila doesn't seem to have a problem with him and she was the one that he used the offensive word to.

Thats not completely true. This word was said in the hearing of other people and even if Laila had not been at all bothered by it but one of the other people present was offended, they could have complained to the police about it and the police would investigate it as a possible racist incident. So its not only the person a word is directed at who has the right to be offended. I am not suggesting that this incident was serious enough for this action at all but just trying to point out that anti racist legislation doesnt only cover the person actually being racial abused.

I think it will have damaged his future prospects. I reckon he was a serious contender for replacing Brucie, but think his chances of securing the gig have dropped significantly.
