I'm another approaching 40 'old git' who really likes the Cure.
Predictably I'm more fond of their early stuff. Right from hearing 'Killing an Arab" on the John Peel show in 78 I knew they would be special. I have their first 3 albums on vinyl and greatest hits on CD.
Saw them live pretty early in their career supporting Siouxsie and the Banshees (their guitarist had just buggered of and Robert Smith stepped and played both sets!)
My personal favourite is 'The Forest' which I still love to listen to LOUD!
I'd also recommend their hits DVD as in the extras there's an acoustic set which is damn fine.
