Ain't Too Proud To Beg - Temptations
The co-writer, Edward Holland, was originally a singer but took to working behind the scenes due to stagefright.... Senses Working Overtime - XTC Similarly, XTC's Andy Partridge refused to tour for years for the same reason... |

Black Betty - Ram Jam
Eton Rifles - The Jam Some sources claim that the origin of Black Betty is an 18th century marching cadence about a flint-lock rifle. |

Eton Rifles - The Jam
Turning Japanese - The Vapors connection - besides citing place-names in the titles, both the above bands used to play at the Wooden Bridge pub in Guildford, which (further connection) the Stones had also graced about 15 years or so before. Nobody has ever mentioned the Stranglers playing there, but it would not be at all unlikley. Although now a pub on a residential street, at the time the Stones played there, it was a road-house on the A3, but they made that section a bypass which cut it off from the major road, which must have had a terrible impact on the place. There are still photos of Jagger and Richards on the wall in the bar. |

Turning Japanese - The Vapors
Get A Grip - Semisonic Connection: In the U.S., 'Turning Japanese' was believed to euphemistically refer to the face a male makes during the act of masturbation - David Fenton would alternately confirm and deny the rumour. 'Get A Grip' is also thought to allude to wanking and many sex jokes appear throughout the video.

Get a grip - Semisonic
Peaches - The Stranglers Connection - The Stranglers' album "Rattus Norvegicus" featured the song "Get a grip (on yourself)" and "Peaches" - perhaps their most erotic anthem is also on that album. There was no finer tune to watch girls to (back in the mid-late 70s) than "Peaches". |

Smoke On The Water - Deep Purple
King Kong ~ Frank Zappa... SOTW's lyrics arise from a Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention concert that was held in a casino's theatre in Switzerland. During the gig, a fire broke out. In the middle of Don Preston's synthesizer solo on "King Kong", the place suddenly caught fire. The title refers to the subsequent smoke rising on the water of the Lake Geneva. |

Blues For Ceausescu - Fatima Mansions
Groovy Train - The Farm Connection: Fatima Mansions took their name from a downmarket housing estate, no longer in existence, in Rialto, Dublin where John Roberts lived. The Farm named themselves after Cantril Farm, Liverpool, the notorious estate where its members had grown up |
