I have just cancelled my sky (which took about half an hour, they don't want to let you go do they?!)

I am looking at 2 different boxes and not sure what to go for they are

Goodmans 500Gb HD Freesat recorder GFSDTR500HD

Humax 320Gb Freesat recorder FOXSAT HDR

both are the same price. I Like the fact that the goodmans has the extra drive space but am not sure if that is the best make. The chap in maplins said Humax are really good, but would really like some opions from you guys in here as I know that some of you are quite "techy" and know your stuff, also will maybe have had personal experiance of said boxes.

Not sure where you got your prices from (Im guessing Maplins) but check out http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/ for the best prices. Humax comes out £100 less than the Goodmans.

I personally have the Foxsat - and not happy at all with it.. many bugs with no sign of it being fixed, and there is a another humax box in the works in 2010 so the foxsat is at the very end of its shelf life, I've lost all faith with humax and now I have the prospect in having to spend another £300 just to keep up with any future developments.

I do like the Goodmans - bigger hard drive, and many more better features - the box is fugly but stick it in a cabinet and you wont be any of the wiser.

To be honest its a shame you never held out just a little bit longer there is another Freesat PVR just about to be released, has divx features and loads of other extra's - might be a investment just to hold out but depends how desperate you need a pvr.

Goodmans get's my vote if you pick now - wide birth around the humax.

I have had the Foxsat since it came out (10 months) I think it's a good piece of kit which can only get better after the overdue firmeware update, the Goodmans? no ones tried it for any length of time, will it have bugs? I would be surprised if there isn't a thread started with bugs found on it, will they be put right by Goodmands? anybodys guess, so I vote for the Foxsat.

I have had the Foxsat Humax HDR for about 8 months. I have had only one failed recording. The only thing that does niggle me is the inability to be able to delete whilst recording. I believe this is being fixed in the forthcoming update.

My vote goes for the Humax. In my opinion, it is nowhere near as bad as it has been portrayed.

You will always here more bad stuff as people are posting looking for solutions but if the box is ok then less is said, I've had failed recordings but it has always been the broadcastor's fault and not Humax.

If yours is that bad take it back, you obviously have a duff box - sure there are a number of bugs, mainly really minor, and iplayer delay has put back the fixing of them, but Jesus buy a Goodmans, are you going to suggest Amstrad next ?

For context most owners think the biggest bug is you cannot delete whilst a recording is happening, it's hardly the end of the world and Humax have it down as fixed in the much delayed iplayer firmware.

Buy a Humax HDR.

I use mine in FREESAT mode with two LNB connections and, touch wood, haven't had a problem with it yet (3 months).

Buy the Humax Foxsat HDR - had it 6 weeks - it's excellent.
And I have now cancelled my Sky subscription after I had watched all my Sky+ recordings

Exactly so. Since there is no word of the iplayer beta testing starting we will be VERY LUCKY to see anything generally available until 2010. But its still a good product nevertheless.

Yes it's looking that way but it is a shame that the firmware update couldn't have been done in 2 parts, leaving the iPlayer update till later, still as you say in other post better then having a Goodmans type update

What experience of the HDR do you need to see where the threads are going.

There has been a similar one for the last few months - so why should November be any different (unless you know there will be an update prior to that!)

This thread was about advice on what box to get.

There are too many people knocking the HDR, who don't even own one, including the inferences to be drawn from your post with the sarcastic rolleyes.

Your post would have had more weight & relevance, if you owned an HDR, and could speak about whether the delayed release materially affects the day to day operational use of the box for most people.

If you don't own any of the boxes mentioned, what are you even posting on this thread for? Or are you yet another one of the SkyPatrol roaming the Freesat forums ready to put the platform and the boxes down?

And no, I don't know when it will be released, but my box is happily recording all the programmes I want, and playing them back without a glitch at my leisure.

I've had mine for about 4 months and I've not had one lost recording.There are things that people have complained about on here but tbh they haven't effected me.

Coming up to 12 months same experience.
