I think it depends on what field you were in to begin with....Darren Gough and Ramps have not shown any particular interest in using their SCD win to get into another field other than what they were doing before.

For actors and singers etc I suppose they hope it will raise their profile. Apart from the Tour I have seen nothing in the papers or otherwise much about Tom. I know he tried to get a Gene Kelly type film made but it came to nothing and has gone back to another soap type drama almost a year after leaving Holby.

Well the true benefit of a good run on SCD became clear last night. On the back of melting his trousers in the Jive, Gethin has managed to oust Kim Wilde as the face of Holland and Barrett in their new run of TV adverts.

Blue Peter to SCD and thence to mega-stardom.

In the short term:

Jill starred in the West End (Chicago),
Goughie made a few bob from writing a book about his experience.
I don't think Ramps exploited his success.
Alesha having been dropped by her record company, landed another deal. She is now judging on SCD (I've said all I intend to on that subject) and I believe she is about to publish her autobiography.

Others, notably Austin, whilst not winning found other doors open to him.

Most who have or are taking part, whatever the result, maintain that it is one of their best life experiences.

Are you likely to being in a position to have to make that choice? I'd like to know about the novelty hit too, so a link would be great please.

Ignazio , I don't think he wanted to exploit it , because the benefit of it was not , in his eyes , monetary.
It may be that his undoubtedly higher media profile may be beneficial in the future

The difference between SCD and most of the other reality shows is that celebs queue up to do it without being desperate to boost their careers through reality TV. Do you really think the fame of Joe Calzaghe, Emma Bunton et al was ever going to depend on SCD?

Most of the winners have had credible careers before the show and go on to remain credible in their fields. We shouldn't forget that no matter what people think of Alesha's music, she made a name for herself in the cut-throat pop world, which takes quite some doing.

This isn't a make-or-break show, simply because the people hired to go on it aren't desperate fame-seekers, because the producers can pick people who aren't in it just for the camera time.

I've got to agree. Ramps did deserve a Test call up but the selectors were on a hiding to nothing. If he did well it would have been clear that as the best batsman in county cricket he should have been in the team for the last 5 or 6 years. If he failed they would have chosen badly. They should however be used to that.

I am delighted that he took part in Strictly. He and Karen made it the best series ever.

Music doesn't work like that any more for most people. You arrive, if you are lucky you sell two albums and after that no one buys what you make because the fans and producers have moved to the next latest thing and the new generation of fans won't go for something older. Most singers have to find something else to do. Some males can get their old fans back and back but even there its spotty who is still popular and who people forget. Some singers may try and use turning up on TV to revive interest but it tends to work better at opening new doors than old ones.

I'm sure you're right - and despite his success it could be argued that his appearance on SCD contributed to his marriage breakdown.

A high price to pay.
