Thanks Ncorners, appreciate your information & feedback. I've seen their is also a weekly blog on Dave Arch & the band on www.hayleysanderson.com , it gives a very detailed insight into how much they have to put in on the Saturday.........if I was honest I watch the program for its entertainment , glamour & the fact it is the only programme on TV that uses live music, so I am a big fan of SCD.....but I am not a dancer & do not take it as serious as others who watch it......for me its the whole package I like, especially the music , & not just the dancers. Keep up the good work you do ! I think you guys are amazing!

Dear Abbasolutely 40,

Forgive my lack of forum etiquette i wasn't aiming the "hurtful" comment at your post, but to others posts that have been pointed out to me. As i have said, everyone is entitled to their opinion. The problem, i find with the written word is the tone can be misinterpreted. I was never very good at school so maybe i need to write with more care. Very sorry.
I really didn't write on the forum to upset or anger anyone, just to put across a little information that may explain a few things from our side.
Having seen that i may get things wrong, i think i'll back out of the room and leave everyone to do their thing.
All the very best to you and everyone else.

Bye bye

If anyone does have question they want answering please ask through the band website. www.strictlycomedancingband.com

I am basing my opinion on the show I saw on teli .There may be technical reasons why it would be better online and I will never know because I cant access it
But we base opinion on the show and how it came across , and there were huge amounts of posts , both here and on BBC about that particular song , on that particular night .
Thank you for explaining the technicalites which dont change what we heard that night .
If you post on a forum , you invite criticism and support , and you must be open to it .
I stated clearly that I enjoy the band and the live music and its mostly great and pointed out one criticism .”

I can't see where your coming from AB40 , Ncorners post was not getting at you at all & if it was then I must be on another planet, I think you've read wrong & with a negative attitude. I think Ncorners posts are very interesting & informative. I hope he doesn't stop posting......its nice that he takes the time to do so

Ncorners , Thank you for that reply and I didnt reply to upset anyone either.I think we have our wires crossed
But as your post was in reply to mine I then take it you are referring to me and not to any other post .
My point is that the forum is open to debate and disscussion and that is what I did.

I cant think of any single reason why my pointing that out should make you back out of the room . If you feel that becuase I said the one song , out of the many sung was not to my taste that you need to do that , then that is your perogative
But coming on DS and expecting only positive is a little naive !!
I hope you can returm and contribute more interesting facts
And we can enjoy a good debate

The vocal on it's own is great, but, as i've said, it sticks out against the band. Therefore i can see how it might distract from the dance. Now having said this i need to explain a couple of things. I hope you don't mind. Firstly, the band/singers have to try and perform the song as close as we can to the track the dancers are rehearsing to. In this case, Diana Ross, i believe. We don't have time to change the keys of any of the songs so the singers have to do their best to match the original in a original key, not the key that they would be happier singing it in. Then there are the guys mixing it for TV, the sound that you hear. These guys have to mix the band, singers, Bruce, Tess, all the dancers and Celebs mics, the audience mics and more then i can think of right now. Its over a 100 mics in total. For different formats, HD, stereo, mono, internet, and they do this only having heard the band and singers on the day. So they only get to hear the songs as many times as we play them before the live show that day, maybe 3/4 times max. Bearing that in mind I think they do an incredible job. They would love to have more time, as would we, to make it sound exactly like the records we are trying to imitate. But we don't, so we all do our best in the time we have. Things will get missed now and then, we are only human after all.
I hope i haven't bored you and i thank you for the supportive comments.
My tip if you want to listen to the music, put your head phones into the computer and listen on the strictly website after the show, you get a much truer idea of what it sounds like. All TV's sound different. You may still hate it, but i'll be happier that you've checked it out properly before you right a hurtful comment on here. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion.
If i can answer any more questions please ask via our website and i will do my best to answer them.
Thanks again.

PS: To the bass player who wrote above, thanks very much but i think its best to watch the dancers, much prettier i can assure you.”

Thanks for taking the time to explain so many things.
One point which surprised me was the "no time to change the key." Quite often the sheet music available for popular tunes isn't written in the key that is used for recordings as the arrangements for the recording are written in the key most suited to that performer.

In this day and age of modern technology there are computer programmes that can do this.
I appreciate there are several different parts to change, but I thought that would have been possible. It's just a case of playing each part on a keyboard connected to a computer and the programme will change it to any key and the new score can be printed off.
I appreciate it can't be done for every tune, but surely those daft tunes chosen where the singers really struggle to reach particular notes, could be changed?
I know the band gets very little rehearsal time, as professionals they are expected to be able to sight read any score in any key with little rehearsal, but considering how much money is thrown at the lighting as shown on IT2 the other night, perhaps more attention could be given to the problem, as all the special effects in the world are a waste of time if the tune doesn't sound good.

Ncorners, don't go,
You're the one in the know,
About all the music ,
We hear on the show,

It's so nice to be able,
To ask you a question,
Discuss points of interest,
Or make a suggestion,

So, Ncorners, don't go !
Come back on this thread,
You started it so,
Don't put it to bed !

"He" is the bass player and you will see him every week wearing a black hat sitting just behind Dave Arch! He has posted a few times on this forum over the years and always had interesting insights into what the band have to put up with in terms of the amount of time they have to learn any particular song.

I think that over half of the vocal performances on this year's Strictly Come Dancing have been below par. The female singer(s) has(have) been the worst offender(s). There was one dance - I believe it was one of Ricky Whittle's - in which the singer was not only out of tune, but out of time. The musicians then had to decide whether to go with the singer or stay in time with the dancers. I was cringing as I watched.

It is a shame that the singers are not up to standard for the professional dancers and instrumental players and I can fully understand why some viewers prefer to watch the dances with the sound muted or indeed why the professional dancers are increasingly choosing songs without words for their performances.

There has been some great singing on the show, just not enough this year.
