Why is no one upset about the ridiculing of accents?

So, it just occurred to me listening to Chris taking the mickey out of Olas accent that if it weren't an eastern european accent all the bleeding hearts would be harping on about it. Why is it ok for Olas and Vincents accent to be mocked?

I'm not sure if your post is serious, but the mickey taking of Ola's and Vincent's accents is a sign of affection and how well they are getting on with their partners. Why on earth should anyone be offended?

I agree with BuddyB. I love the way that Chris copies Ola's 'baby' and it shows how well they are getting on.

Just struck me as odd tonight. Don't really know why. Chris kept taking off Olas accent and I thought "Blimey would he have got away with that if she'd been from somewhere else" Not a big deal just seemed a bit hypocritical given how PC everything has to be this year.

Like I say just a casual observation. I guess it's still ok to have a laugh about each others accents, etc. Good to see really.

Arg - red rag to a bull that meme is to me!

However, there's a world of difference between gentle mimicry with obvious affection and an imitation used to mock - I think that's why what we've seen haven't been jumped on.

I know what you mean. I do wonder where the line is drawn though. I wonder if the production company has a big book of what's ok and what's not

I love Chris's babe, cha a see, one, two, three, four, five , six se eh ven, eight! - they are fab together!

OP Vincent has always had the mickey taken out of his accent and his English. One of the most classic SCD moments is Vincent saying "Shaking like a leaflet" and on ITT Gethin did a brilliant mickey take in a Vincent accent of a clip of a baby Tapir!

Brilliant!

I think you are looking for something that isn't there.

In the case of Vincent especially he points out enough that he's Italian that it would be almost rude to disregard his heritage. Its not insulting to bring it up. It's not "mocking".

Brian's American. We don't call OFCOM everytime someone makes reference to his American roots. Neither can I find him getting annoyed if Ali put on an American accent - I think he'd be quite flattered actually .

Totally agree. I think it's a sign of a good relationship between the couples.

That's what happens of watching ITT while logged onto the forums after a few beers

Vincent's accent is lovely and brings a smile to my face, just as bruno's does, especially when they are so animated when speaking. I don't see it as 'ridicule or taking the mickey', like someone said it more a sign of affection imo.

I hope and suspect it's because the vast majority of adult viewers are sensible enough to know well enough where the lines may be reasonably drawn with this kind of banter...and don't need the hysterical trash media and pressure groups with questionable agendas to tell them when to be 'offended'...or, at the other extreme, require the likes of the Daily Mail to convince them that all they hold dear is in dire peril from 'loony do-gooders'.

To be fair I think Ola has got on well with all of her celebrities. We didn't see much of her with Spoony, but certainly there were no rumours of a fall out and IIRC the chemistry was good.

Her and Kenny were great together, and Andrew liked her (I think he was more depressed about his ineptitude on the dance floor). I think Chris is the first celebrity to bring her out a bit - before Ola's always been secondary to the celebrity.

Which is why I think she had been getting a hard time on here. Thankfully it seems as though she's more liked this series but before then I think she was criticised slightly unfairly.

She's choreographed some memorable routines, and I think Kenny and Andrew stayed in the competition more because of her choreography and the way she developed them than their personalities (not saying either of them are boring, but Ola brought them out of themselves). Just saying Kenny's Paso Doble or Andrew's Tango will bring back images of certain moves.

Sorry, that's the statement for the Ola Jordan Apprecaition Society over and done with now.

I really am beginning to wonder if before each ITT/SCD there ought to be a voiceover with so many caveats added - 'the following programme may contain comedy of a religious/regional/reallystupid nature and is not advisable for those of a picky/pendantic/prissy disposition'

I suggest that the "objectionability" (????) has a lot to do with the spirit its spoken. Laughing WITH someone ( a la Chris and Ola) is fine; laughing AT someone is not.

Hardly mocking, more an attempt at copying (there is a difference, along the lines of an affectionate copy as opposed to a hurtful mocking).
And as stated, most people are mature enough top realise when it is playful/in jest.

I thought this thread was going to be about how people on here slag off Tess's pronunciation all the time which I find a little irritating. I think there is room on TV for all kinds of accents. 30 years ago Tess would have had to speak in RP to get a job on TV.
On the subject of Chris copying Ola's accent - he's copying her in particular and not stereotyping her speech so it's fine.

Chris and Ola are fantastic as a team.......he has brought out the best in her.. never seen her so smiley and funny in training and on ITT. I look forward to seeing them on ITT and they never dissapoint they are a hoot.

If he can just raise his game in the dancing .....and I dont think its beyond him by any means.......then they would be my champions with no problem. He does take the mickey out of her yes but there is enormous affection in it and its what makes them a great team.

I'm not English but I've grown up here and myself, my mum, dad, and brother all have completely different accents to each other - not one of us the same. We imitate each other all the time and have a good laugh about it, its an affectionate thing to be taken with a sense of humour. I think after the racist events of last week its easy to get carried away and look for things that aren't there. But honestly, I don't think its anything to worry about. If someone genuinely is making fun of someone's accent in a malicious way then it would be pretty obvious and in the case of Chris and Ola and Vincent and Natalie, I think it is all pretty light-hearted and sweet.

I mean the Ola thing for example, is it that different to how everyone jokes about how Len says seven?
