In my experience, the Humax PVR has been fine, it has only reset twice since December 2009. I have only had one failed recording and it has only had one software update. Sure, it’s not Sky+, its slower, deleting programs in bulk can take some time and some of the features such as the remote can take some time to get used to. For me it’s the content, not the equipment.

Funny, that's exactly what I thought when I read your first post in this thread (which sounded exactly like something I would expect to hear from someone working for Sky retentions. ).

Normal people know what channels they tend to watch.

And if the lack of Sky was causing you so much grief, why wait a year to get it back?

And if the Humax is so useless to you why not sell it and recoup some of your losses?

And one also has to wonder why someone who is so fed up with Freesat that they are going to mothball a £300 piece of equipment is wasting their time reading a Freesat specific forum anyway.

I got rid of Sky because I thought it was not value for money at the time, and money was short. Now I have money to spare. I am not going to sell the Humax becuase I dont know what my situation will be in a years time, I am putting aside the money for a years subscription. I came into this forum to find out if there was an update for the HDR, there is not. And just to make it clear to DS mods, I dont work for sky. (Dont want to get banned for making claims LOL)

Consumers need visibility into what's going on. Even if the only answer we get is that "this problem is being addressed" that's better than silence.

But ideally what we need are reasonably regular updates, even when not all reported problems are fixed in any one update.

Now, should folk who work for or exclusively sell or promote one system, have to decare that in the public profile, under power to ban if they do not?

To me it's a more important matter than the moderators easy task of erasing any humour on threads.

Well, how intersting this thread is turning out to be.. £KY must be beginning to get worried about Freesat regardless!! That has to be good for Freesat. Even though I think the box should have been better - there is ZERO chance of me going back to paying for $KY again. The only thing as far as I can see £KY is worth paying for is the sport and I am not that much of a sports fan - apart from Cricket! Hopefully when the firmware upgrade comes out we will all be that bit happier too!!

Yes, there has been new info, but no update.

I have both also and to be honest I have no problems, recording wise, with either. The sky system is less "clunky" than the Humax, but not a major issue. As far as programming I have the Humax in the bedroom and really only use it for recorded TV as I find the programming limited. Most of my live viewing is on Sky as the range of programming better suits my needs. It's really up to what you require, or are happy with.

Is there any evidence for that? I know there's now an unofficial list of things that might be fixed in the (very) long-awaited update; but I haven't seen any indication of whether it'll come this month, next month, this year or next.

Patience is a virtue, there is an update for the HDR its just not been released yet and the reason for that is because its a massive update that not only fixes many issues but introduces completely new features as well - Bob Cat has said as much on several occasions. Its the size thats causing the delay - I wonder what people would say if it was rushed out quickly and caused as many bugs as it solved! I bet there would be a rush of posts about proper beta testing. the fact is at the end of the day you can't have your cake and eat it!

As for the HDR, anyone telling you it isn't functional is lying. There are a very small minority of boxes with serious problems. All of the rest are perfectly good as a day to day Freesat mode receiver / recorder. I love my box although there are some things I'd like to see improved (primarily non freesat mode). Its also proven extremely reliable.

As others have pointed out unless you're unlucky to get a "lemon" most HDR's are perfectly problem free unless you suffer from regular power cuts in which case the problem with the box needing a manual reboot after a power cut could be a problem (although a UPS can easily alleviate this and is preferable as it will prevent the loss of ongoing recordings at the time of the power cut).

We're hearing comparisons here on reliability with Sky + boxes, and yet I know several people who had Sky + boxes that failed during the warranty period. I also know several people who's boxes suddenly failed a few days after the warranty expired. There are loads of similar stories around the net. I'm not trying to discredit Sky here, merely point out that all receivers / pvr's have reliability problems to a greater or lesser extent. It seems no-one has yet come up with the perfectly reliable box. most people are satisfied with Sky boxes as most people are satisfied with HDR's, the choice ultimately comes down to subscription charges and content and whether or not you want (or can afford) to pay for it.

As we only watch a couple of hours TV a day on evenings we are in we can find literally more than enough on BBC2, BBC4 and Film4 with occasional additions from the remaining members of the big 5.

When Sky brought out their broadband and TV for ~£16 we did consider it but decided that we simply didn't need any extra channels. I don't think that would change even if C4 and C5 both went subscription.

If you are so pleased with it I can't understand why you keep banging on about things which some others regard as a problem. You seem to find some way of raising the same issues in almost every thread

Let me spell it out for you in very simple terms.

I am, overall, very happy with my Foxsat, even though there are a number of minor and a couple of more major niggles.

I am not happy that Humax initially indicated that they would issue an update in a reasonably timely manner and in particular stated that the fixes would be issued before the iplayer was added and then reneged on that statement and delayed the bug fixes so that the iplayer could be included.

We were sold a PVR, not an iplayer and as such I firmly believe that they should have sorted out the problems with what we bought before adding features that we didn't.


I trust you are happy now that your intervention has caused this to get yet another airing and that you now understand the situation.

Take it back and get a refund if it's not right.

People who want to come here to promote Sky really should make sure they have a coherent story.

Very pleased with my Humax HDR, just need a firmware update to fix the green screen HDMI handshake issues with my Sony W2000 and i'll be a happy man. Also being able to delete or flag deletion when recording would be nice.

......A small TV screen on the EPG might be a nice addition as well.
