Copy Ipod content to a different Computer
Peachy Keen
17-10-2009
As my computer has given up, please could someone tell me how can l copy the contents of my nano ipod (4th Gen.) to a different computer without losing some or all the content?

I assume this question has been asked before therefore if someone can provide a link to the answer it would be much appreciated.

Cheers in advance

The only reliable one I know of is CopyTrans. Google it. Unfortunately it's not free.

With nano you have an option in itunes when you connect the ipod "Make ipod disc available" or something similar, I haven't seen that option in ages, I have itouch now. Make sure to tell itunes NOT to synchronise the ipod when it asks, it would wipe it clean. The ipod should be visible as a disc drive, you can browse it with explorer (on Windows), make sure it shows hidden directories. Somewhere in the directory structure distributed over several directories you'll find your audio/video files. They will have cryptic names, but inside there's an information about name, album, artwork, etc. Copy these directories to your PC disc and then import them into your itunes library (best if you store them where itunes keep its files, that way it skips copying them again, if you want that, that is). This will work with your own made audio/video files (I did it twice for my brother's children's ipods), didn't test it with bought files from itunes shop though, I haven't got a single file from them.

I used 'Pod to Mac' which is free and worked perfectly. 'Pod to PC' is made by the same people and is worth a look if you have a PC. It's not free though.

Hi, I thought I'd just bump this thread as it's relevant. I've got an Ipod Classic, much the same as the OP I lost my whole PC after a particularly nasty virus. Now my IPod wasn't connected to my computer at any point when the virus came along so I know that it's clean, but I'm now looking to get all my files off my IPod and onto my PC. I've got Windows 7 - I can't find how you 'show hidden files' though and I can't access the music on the Pod as yet. Any tips?

Further to the earlier poster - I found this site, do you know if it's legit?

It's in explorer, folder options, second tab. Just go through the options and select/clear anything accordingly that tries to "help" you by hiding any information from you. You should see your ipod as a drive in explorer or maybe as a device that can be browsed. You have to go through the directories and in one of them is a set of directories where the files are. You have to copy those inside your itunes directory structure and add those directories to itunes. Just make sure to tell itunes to leave your ipod alone when it will try to synchronise your ipod with the empty library. Sorry for not being more specific, but I have iTouch now and Steve does not want me to see those files, so I cannot tell you the exact names.

I tried one of their free products, it worked with itouch, with classic it should be piece of cake. I'd try that if they don't want money for what is essentially copying files from one location to another.

Cant believe this thread was here, just what I was looking for.

That programme is great although it only transferred 100 items on the free one. I ended up just paying for the full version

Another good reason for jailbreaking the iTouch-- you can freely access the entire file-system of the device from your PC (or Mac if you are one of them).

It is stupid that Apple locks the iTouch in the way it does; it was only after unlocking it that I found a flaw in an app that meant it was using twice as much space to store stuff than it needed to, and after reporting it to the author of the app, he agreed and is now going to fix it in the next version (this was an app which could potentially use up many GB).

Apple make good hardware, but why don't they let us use it in the way we want, and run whatever software we wish on it without needing to crack it?

That's Steve Jobs' way of doing business, he does not want a single penny to pass his pockets. Having a control over the devices and how the contents is sold he gets all the money to be had. I had ipod nano and was happy with it, thought that itouch would be even better, but was disappointed with this control freak thing. If they are so afraid of revealing too much, they could just have programmed functionality for 2-way transfer of audio/video files, it would be harmless with the device and itunes registered by the same person, but they just won't do it. I am going off my itouch, I am using it only as a very expensive alarm clock now and use another media player for actually listening to music. BTW audio quality of ipods is positively shit. I did not want to believe it, but in a direct comparison with other players it is painfully obvious.

Music Rescue - previously known as PodUtil is free - or £10 if you want to avoid payment reminders
