Did anyone catch the 'new' version of Gold on SCD tonight? Tony Hadley's voice is as good as ever. But I got the feeling no instruments were played by the others.

We're going to see them at the O2 next week, should be fun.

They weren't using a backing track by chance?

I thought the balance was all wrong, the strings were too loud and no way was that tenor sax being played.

Anyway, enough of that.

Who's the fattest?
Tony Hadley, or the Nolans?

There's only one way to find out!

Tony Hadley has a fine voice but only in fits and starts tonight.I suppose its a new arrangement but it didnt stand much comparison with the original imo.

It looked like just the Kemps and 'Tony Hadley we love you madly'.

John Kebel & Steve Norman missing?

Oh dear. Has the tub ’O guts not shed the flab? As the majority shareholder in Greggs he was made to promise to get down to a fighting weight for these gigs but let’s face it, who can resist a Ginsters or twelve?

The song Gold is now sponsored by Terry’s.

That was a hilarious performance, Steve Norman on the saxophone stopped playing while the music continued and he laughed they really dont care do they and certainly only doing it for the money

I heard the new song on the radio and before they said who it was singing I thought it was a new song by Alison Moyet

I saw this...I quite like the arrangement, but I didn't like the vocal on it. Vocally, I prefer the original.

You cannot help but be cynical about Spandau Ballet's return.

They split acrimoniously in the early 1990s and didn't speak for years, not forgetting a lengthly court battle over royalties.

It seems to be a bit of a 'marriage of convenience'. They're most likely in need of the cash and have seen other groups make a success of returning to the spotlight.

Tony Hadley is a good singer but it sounded like a bit of a struggle in places and the others were back in their usual role of bit-parters and stage decoration.

Was not a fan even back then.

Liked Echo and Bunnyman and Cure more.

These endless comebacks are becoming a pain. Only Take That seems to have worked well ( fans, and commercially ) 2nd time around.

I blame the "credit crunch" for the plethora of "has beens" returning to tour the country in "reunion concerts."
I mean "The Nolans" for cryin' out loud.

It's only that the current musical scene is such a wilderness that some may have a year of success.

Take That have managed to return with some reasonable material and not look like a bunch of middle-aged dad dancers, but the vast majority of these comebacks are becoming desperate.

Every novelty group, cabaret act and goodness knows what else think they can have a crack at it - hence why we're having to endure the likes of the Nolans (who weren't even any good the first time around) all over again.

I thought the new arrangement of Gold was awful. Nothing, from the strings to Tony's vocals seemed to work. Shame, because I quite like the original.

That's part of the history of pop.

They always think they can improve on the original, or that a new version will sell.

This 46 year old song was the ninth most played record of the 20th century.

The lead singer John Gummoe re-recorded it last year.

His voice has held up remarkably well, but the new version hasn't the appeal of the original.

They should have stuck with the original arrangement.

This version was a touch clumsy, as if they were trying too hard to give it a new sound.

I liked Spandau a lot the first time round. When they appeared on Wossy a few months back they were really good. Hadley's voice is undoubtedly still in good shape, but the arrangement last night wasn't that good, IMO.

I agree with those that cite Take That's comeback as the only one that has really worked - in terms of how they look & sound and their new material.

Spandau's new material has yet to surface, and they can sound good when they are on the ball. But seriously, Tony Hadley needs to lose some weight. He was a good looking guy in his youth, and could be again if he shed the pounds. After all, Martin Kemp still looks OK. These days, it seems that the public will happily watch pop stars in their 40s and upwards, but I think it's still the case that they really don't like very overweight ones, however old they are.

Vocal was live but sung over a backing track - surely that was obvious to see! No leads or wireless guitar connections plugged in so a dead giveaway. Personally, I thought it was a very good version of the song and Tony Hadley's voice sounded fine. Going to the O2 next Thursday so we'll see then!
