Missing Programme Endings
NewWorldMan

Humax.

Until now I've just relied on the auto setting for programme end times. But I seem to be missing more and more endings recently, especially on the mainstream channels and their offshoots, actually mainly on the ones with adverts. I rarely get a problem with Zone, M4M, etc.

I know you can add padding to the endings but I expected the auto setting to be good enough. I didn't really want to add padding in case I start screwing up adjacent recordings. What happens with inadvertent overlaps? Has anyone experimented with this? If so, what settings would you advise?

The default action on the hdr is to continue recording the late running programme until it get's the end of recording flag and then record the second programe. The hdr puts up a warning of the conflict when it happens. The auto settings are only as reliable as the broadcaster getting the codes and flags right.

I'm not Humax (were you addressing this to them?).

Which programmes, in particular, have you had missed endings on? I use auto (AR) extensively on the "main" channels, and the only issue I had recently was the first 2 episodes of Jamie's American Roadshow on C4, which cut 3 mins from each ending, so I didn't trust C4 on the rest of the series and set a manual timer.

I don't use Autopadding as we record many back-to-back, concurrent programmes on different channels (2 progs recording at once constantly for most of the evening). With AP, this would cause too many clashes.

Rgds.

No, it was just my shorthand telling you I'm referring to the Humax box specifically.

The C4 channels are especially bad. The last Jamie roadshow is a case in point.

Yep, same here. I guess I'll just have to pad on a case by case basis where there's no potential clash.

I was warned that adding padding will disarm the flag from the broadcaster so if you add time to the programme and it’s shifted 15 mins late you will miss the ending (that does not happen with Sky + or HD).

Ah yes, good idea actually with the other Freesat PVRs around/imminent, we've had it to ourselves for so long it feels like the Humax HDR forum Apologies to Panny's & Others.

Apart from Jamie, I can't remember when I had an issue with AR endings, but C4 aren't great with their Series Links. Every now and again, they will change/corrupt their CRIDs causing havoc with SL.

The very occasional need for a Manual Timer with small padding will sort you out as you see the need arise.

FWIW I use zero padding before/after on my Sky box to work around a long standing (like two years + ) bug. I hardly ever miss the start or end of anything. It might be worth trying that if you are having problems with accurate record.

Is that the back-to-back recording bug on Sky+/HD?

I don't think you can have zero padding on the HDR, from memory it is 1, 2, 3, 5, minutes.

It is normally the channels that have live insert programmes such as news or just live TV programmes in general that make mistakes. Many of the other channels have no live broadcasts and just run to schedule every day.

When a live programme over-runs then the broadcaster must update their running status to reflect that and when they don't it bothers everyone else in the chain. I would welcome a thread that logs/lists every programme for which accurate failed so that the broadcasters can see their mistakes. In the main the Foxsat-HDR follows AR signalling faithfully.

Yeah that's the bug. Supposedly the new EPG fixes it but then it introduces it's own issues

I'm quite surprised that it works (I wouldn't trust most broadcasters as far as I can spit) but apparently they usually do stick quite closely to the schedule.

Bob,

I find the HDR's implementation of AR to be VERY accurate in following the signals; against comparison testing with the 9200 & 9300 it outperformed them by some margin.

There was an attempt to start up such a thread here . I, too, think it's a good idea, but as has already happened, it drops off the radar. It would be visible, and might get more use if it was a "Sticky" at the top of the forum.

Rgds.
