i've just been looking to transfer all my old vinyl to my laptop and cd, but have managed to confuse myself with my tunnel visioned view that it would simply be a case of running a cable from its twin red and white connectors from the phono output on the amp to the single 3.5mm jack line in to the laptop.

...except that there is no phono out at the back of the amp (a sony 1080).

..am i missing something remarkably obvious here? can i still do this? what output should i be looking to use...?

cheers,
Iain

You can use the tape "rec out" sockets on the amp. I assume it has those?

Cheers

Vinyl deck to input on Amp, then run a low cost red&white phono wire-3.5mm combi jack from the rec-out socket on the amp to the input on the pc.

Not sure what kind of hifi the Sony 1080 is. If its a compact all in one type box, you may not have the necassary connections.

Another thing. The output wire from the vinyl deck is low power (compared with tape, cd, digibox, etc). Older hifi seperates have a special input socket just for vinyl which bumps up the power. But I have noticed that on some modern seperartes, this is no longer there. In such cases, a special booster box needs to be installed in line between the vinyl deck and the hifi.

i've just tried it with them, and it worked fine. i wasn't sure you could / should, and i just had a mental block faced with the lack of a similar phono out.

now i just have to play around with the enormous file sizes generated (a 40 min album was just under 400MB!!)

Not sure if you already have any software for this but you could have a look here http://www.br0wn.co.uk/vinyltocd.htm

Aye get some sound software

I'd recommend SoundForge - it also has good vinyl restoration addon plugin - but they are pricey

oh yeah - i was using spin doctor (part of roxio toast) on a mac.

i've found the option to convert to AAC in i-tunes - i had been looking for it as part of spin doctor.

the quality isn't that great, but then it is an analogue recording, artificially digitised, and then compressed.

Hi I have an optical out port free on my amp and an optical connection on my motherboards built in sound card. Could I use that to connect my turntable to the PC to transfer the tracks across?

Denon 2802 amp if that helps

One thing to watch out for, particularly with a laptop, is that there is a Line-in connection and not just a Mic input. If using a Mic input you will only get a mono recording of one of the stereo channels.

Connect the vinyl deck to the Denon amp with the normal phono cord. Install a optical cable between the optical out on the Denon amp and the optical input socket on the PC. Using the Denon amp controls, select the vinyl input (might be called phono or record player) so you can year the playback on the speakers (or headphones). This should now be pushing a signal up the optical wire to the PC.
