I just think the very idea of it turns people off. I'm sure if my daughters lived with me they'd get into SCD but they don't and they haven't and they won't. Oh, and it has Brucie.”

Yes I agree I am a strictly fan but I am amazed that everyone I talk to watches X.Factor and most of them older people as well. Some people have even said they cannot stand all that rubbish of SCD. None of my grown up children watch it. I am surprised but there you are.

Personally, I think it is the "water cooler" effect. People watch shows that other people are talking about.
Like it or not, X-Factor (and more recently BGT) create a buzz..you can blame the tabloid press to a certain extent, but I don't believe that is the only reason.
My wife and I have watched SCD from the beginning and will continue to do so..it's my wife's favourite programme.
However, I have noticed a distinct drop in interest among friends and work colleagues, and very few are readers of the "Red Tops". I don't know why, even we have said that the current series has lost a little of the "magic".
This year, there even appears to be fewer post in the forum here..or is that my imagination ?

FWIW I genuinely think the show needs a John Sergeant , someone who can't dance but goes far , in order to keep the interest of those who watch in order to be entertained and not for the dancing

This is what keeps viewing figures up , until it does get a bit more exciting towards the end .

Very few actually capture the public imagination and those who have , have mostly been poor dancers

Exceptions may be : Ramps and Matt Dawson, Alesha, Matt Di Angelo, Tom Chambers last year .

These are the ones who keep people watching
The general viewer doesn't give two hoots about insults , kangaroos , stick insects , rag dolls or whatever ; they just enjoy the entertainment .”

It may keep some people watching but ultimately when you get a JS figure doing practically nothing that could be called dancing or entertainment and in danger of winning without actually even trying , the anti-judge voting kills the show. Other viewers will note that its no use following the good dancers if they go while the dire ones stay and potentially good celeb dancers won't sign up for a show where someone hopeless gets 40% for not trying whilst you get 2% for doing well and trying very hard.

I don't think Dawson, Di Angelo and Chambers won for capturing the public imagination or having a story - they did so well because they were males and attracted more female votes than their often better female opposition. Ramps had a story and Alesha was the best one there by miles after her opposition left early.

This year they have avoided what sells the show to lots of their markets. You suspect because they don't want another JS fiasco or something worse and do want a credible winner. The judges are being nicer so the anarchist anti-judge voters are tuning off and voting for J and E on X Factor. Ricky W may or may not be attractive enough to appeal to the female vote which votes on those terms and Chris or the other Ricky is hardly a runner in that race. They have avoided the bad and potentialy too popular dancers and managed to get rid of Joe when he turned out to be one, so there's no one building that vote. In terms of stories the stories are mostly ones we have read before - Eastender learns to be a lady and hunky cricketer changes into artistic dancer. The Eliza Doolittle and Billy Elliot stories look stale after so many retellings. In terms of quality, they have some good females who are stalled either with no votes , no Latin or the wrong choreography and a run away winner which doesn't look like a good race.

Its not actually that bad and if the better females can be kept in may turn out to be a good competition but you can see why its not going to excite some of its usual audience.

Meanwhile they been silly enough to challenge X Factor when X factor has the full list of males who are attractive to female teens, males who are attractive to older females, people with strong back stories and talented female singers - plus judges who are bigger stories than the finalists and really big guests.

I've read some posters blaming the people who voted for John Seargent. Words almost fail me at this point. I remember fondly the warmth of John and Kristina's dances.

It came as little surprise James and Zoe were in the dance off this week. If James casts his mind back 12 months, he might get an idea of why.”

Given that JS' biggest critic, Arlene, has now been transformed into a saint by the media who were championing him last year, I strongly suspect that James Jordan's brief outburst has been forgotten by most of the audience ...

thenetworkbabe - I agree with much of your analysis. It is just a shame that we are still spending somuch time posting about the politics behind the scenes rather than the dancing itself ...

I can't say for sure about the numbers overall, but all lot of posters rarely leave the Appreciation Threads, which now have their own sub forum - that would make the main board look quieter.

Yes, agreed. I had forgotten about that. Never use Appreciation Threads myself, so haven't looked in that sub-section.

I also wonder if it might have something to do with the "Anton Du Beke in alleged Racist Slur" thread.
I don't wish to make light of it, but 2,300 posts and counting..come on, that's a bit OTT. Perhaps I should ignore it, but I find myself drawn in to view the latest post in that thread, then leave a little depressed.
I know some people feel strongly about the incident, but this section is supposed to be for light-hearted banter about SCD. I'm all for serious discussion of racist issues (or any other issues for that matter) but is the SCD forum really the place ? I will state my views, and argue the toss til the cows come home, in the general or political forums..can't we have a break in here ?
