You can do it via a USB drive but it won't work for encrypted HD programmes (all of them at the moment IIRC), which are locked to the device on which they were recorded.

Thanks for that Tern, have you any idea how big an hour of SD recording is ?

About 2GB.

Edit: But don't go and get a 2GB pen drive. Formatted, these come to 1.8/1.9GB anyway. 1hr progs from the higher resolution, and higher bitrate channels, will come to slightly over 2GB.

Yes, and if you wanted to transfer a 2+ hour movie, it could be >4GB, so you would come up against the 4GB FAT32 file limit, and would then have to format to ext3 under Linux.

Don't forget as well that all USB drives are not created equal.
Can make a big difference in transfer times. I am very happy with my corsair voyager 8 gb - I was timing a transfer the other day it was averaging about 3.5 mins per gig of transfer from the HDR and was quite satisfied with that. Not sure how it happened but mine is listed as fat32 too - how did that work?

FAT32 has a 4Gb individual file size limit not a volume size limit of 4Gb

Since I've currently got two episodes of FlashForward on my 4GB USB stick at the moment, I thought I'd share the file sizes:

1 episode with recording padding set to 2 minutes before and 5 minutes after programme is 1.834GB and another episode with padding set to "Auto" is 1.636GB. Both copied onto this stick no problem.

Thanks for all. I'll not bother. I was hoping it might be possible via the ethernet port and a spot of peer-to-peer networking or via a cable into my router.

I seem to remember years ago transfering files between a laptop and a Digifusion STB using either a serial cable or USB cable and thought the HDR might have inherited / built on this feature.

The first is a 67 min file, and the second should be a 60min file.

If my maths is correct that gives a bitrate of approx 3813 Kbits/sec, which looks about right for Fiver according to Linowsat.

If you had recorded an hour from ITV West Country at an average from the last 10 days of approx 6800 Kbits/sec, you would get a file of 2.92GB, quite a difference.

Can you not get an external USB network drive? If the HDR is connected via USB for the recordings and the drive is in your network, that would solve the problem wouldn't it?

(I haven't looked to see whether you can tell the HDR to record to somewhere other than the internal drive).

If I put a FAT32 formatted 80GB IDE HD into an external drive caddy and connect it to the HDR via USB will I be able to transfer SD files on to it ?

Yes, there should be no problem with this provided the individual .ts files are not greater than 4Gb in size
