OK - had my 3GS since launch and updated firmware as and when an itunes update came along.

Currently @ v3.1 baseband is 05.07.11.

Now i dont want to unlock my phone but am liking the look of some apps i can run if Jailbroken (folders, themes etc).

Been looking around internet and i cant figure out if i can jailbreak my 3GS etc and keep getting different answers. I think i can JB but not unlock.

So - can someone tell me if i can jailbreak my 3GS in its current state?

Thanks

If you got it within the last two weeks you might not be able to. In any other case Blackra1n will be able to jailbreak it (so long as you update to 3.1.2 first)

The current updates of the 3Gs can, apparently, still be jailbroken using a USB exploit but it's not recommended as you have to have your phone connected to your computer every time you want to restart it.

That is also a software exploit and so it will almost certainly be patched by Apple now the exploit is out in the open.

This isn't true. This is only the case on the 3rd gen ipod touch. I am currently running a jailbroken iphone on version 3.1.2 with no problems whatsoever. You do not need to hook it up to a PC on each reboot. You can jailbreak it but with the new baseband update it cannot be unlocked, so yes, you can jailbreak with no problems and as the first person who answered you said, you need a programme called blackra1n to complete the jailbreak.

Good luck and enjoy your jailbroken phone!

Please don't sprout incorrect information. The newest batch of 3GS iPhones have an updated bootrom and to jailbreak them they have to be tethered to boot. This was a move made by Apple to block jailbreaking. Check Gizmodo for more information.
