I know maybe I shouldn't have started a new thread for this as I have done one on robbie earlier but oh well

Does anyone remeber when Spice Girls won the Oustanding Contribution award at the brits in 2000. Whenever people discuss this specific award, they always seem to think the girls should never have recieved it.

Well, here is my imput. I presume most people dont think they should have got it because there not talented. Fair enough, apart from Mel C, they arn't great singers. But were in the award title Oustanding Contribution does it say anything about talent? It clearly says 'contribution'.

- World Domination (only british group to do this since the Beatles)

- 9 UK #1s, Including 3 consecutive Xmas #1s, (ok so the charts dont mean much, but that is quite a good thing that not many do achieve just in a space of 2 years) and not to mention 55 million records sold worldwide

- They are the best selling girlband of all time, they had individuality and personality which most girlbands that have tried to reinvent them, have not got.

- Geri's Union Jack dress has become Iconic and is the most expensive clothing of pop merchandise ever sold (). It is arguably the most famous and iconic moment in Brit awards history.

- They pretty much dominated the 90s and become more than a band, but part of culture and will go down in pop music history.

- They reinvented pop music at a time were it was slowly fading away, and if it wern't for them, I doubt there would be more girlbands than ever before.

- Also not to forget they did co-write all their songs depsite what you might believe, unlike alot of bands out their today.

There probably is more that I could add, but at the end of the day, I still think they have contributed alot to music, even if it isnt their singing voices. I just wonder why so many people have a problem with them winning it. Is it because they arn't talented, or is it because they were only around for a couple of years? Or simply because there music was known as rubbish pop music and manufactured?

Am I alone in this? I think I have written a pretty good argument here and I would appreciate your opinions whether you agree or not.

I agree with every word. But I think you had to be there to see it with them. If you weren't old enough you couldn't understand how MASSIVE these girls were. We haven't seen anything like it since.

To teenagers today they are probably just five sad women who were boring but they were far more than that. The likes of Girls Aloud and Sugababes could never have competed with the Spices when they were at their peak. Infact Girls Aloud and Sugababes have not even touched what the Spices were.

Its a shame they are sort of looked down on thesedays. They deserve far more credit than they get. It was them who made pop comeback to the mainstream.

yes you put your argument very well.... but somehow, dispite the facts (well some im not so sure about, thought bananarama and the supremes sold more worldwide) i just cant credit THEM with anything... they were controled by simon fuller, a product... i dunno... i just cant credit them enough to warrant that award.

I agree with everything that you've said and I think it's about time that the ladies were given much more credit I mean, we haven't seen any band this century get anywhere close to the level of fame that the girls had and even now considering almost 15 years since they first broke onto the scene, they do still command alot of column inches

My mum was into the Spice Girls when they were big, and so were my friends, but I never really got into them. Really am loving their albums now though, still sounds fresh in my opinion! Yes, they do deserve more credit.

They deserved the award, it does make me laugh when I hear kids proclaiming GA "rule the world". It's a shame Geri pulled the plug in some ways, because the year she left they were slowly coming into their own element.

Anyone who watched their 1998 Brit performance will remember particular guests in the audience. I've yet to see the likes of Tom Jones and Jools Holland smiling and bopping heads to a girlgroup from this era.
