There seems to be alot of Jazz (of the chart friendly variety, anyway) about these days, spearheaded I guess, by Mr Cullum. Jazz in danger of becoming the in thing?

A jazz sound was considered very cool in the 80s, when every other song seemed to have a sax solo. But as the 80s became the 90s, the presence of the sax seemed to be regarded as quite naff in a particularly 80s way and it died out pretty quickly.

Since it has recently become cool to return to 80s pop, maybe the current jazz renaissance has something to do with that?

Well, you can soon hear all types of Jazz Music on a new Internet Only station coming soon. The website is under a bit of construction work ATM, but anyway:-

Just be careful to type that in correctly.

Like Marillion fan said, it was big in the 80s. Maybe it's time is coming up again? I suppose it's possible, as the chillout market has seemingly been bled dry.

Depends what you call jazz I suppose.

I have no idea if what I buy fits a certain type/genre. Just bought Katie Melua cos I love the songs on it. Is that a type of jazz/pop? Is Jamie Callum jazz? I thought jazz was all that sleepy sax blues type stuff which I hate. I think it all just comes under pop for popular.

I don't care what label others put on what I like to listen to. I just buy something I like. Which covers a huge area of different stuff from pop to Frank Sinatra. Which could also be described as pop. But the purests would say swing probably.

I don't like music snobbery.

The scary thing is we had a jazz-only top 3 in the album chart. I personally like Jamie and Katie, but norah is a bit boring for me.

norah, jamie and katie are jazz-flavoured rather than jazz.stuff like sade in the 80's was labeled 'new jazz'(SO imaginative those music journos),but it was jazz flavoured rather than jazz.it's like saying shania twain is pure country when it's clearly soft rock with country trimmings.real jazz can't be the new 'rock'n'roll'to be called that it would need mass appeal, and shifting time signatures and deliberately offbeat soloing can't compete with R'n'B or garage.
