They didn't get the increase in the LF they wanted so they have had to make cuts like everybody else as you well know. They are making the cuts in the wrong areas eg. EastEnders, SCD tho seemingly. They would do better to make cuts on the wage bills of the overpaid managers rather than the talent and from the production budgets of their biggest shows. It's the same scenario at ITV though whatever shit it has been in and arguably with the recession it has been in more trouble than the BBC the managers are still walking away with huge bonuses. The word for it is greed and it's not doing anyone any favours.

The licence fee was set for 5 year period before the recession so thats no true. Arguably the BBC may have lost money by not being able to sell property to developers at prices they expected, but equally the cost of buildings they are acquiring SHOULD be cheaper assuming they manage the projects properly.

For the first 7 days of this month, where ITV has had its strongest schedule, these are the current primetime share averages:-

BBC1: 20.6%
ITV1: 30%

So, ITV1 currently in the lead in December, but can it stay like that? I wouldn't have thought so really, as I'm a Celebrity has come to an end, meaning ITV's weekday shares are likely to be lower.

Thursday, with The Bill, will surely hold over 20% share at least, but Tuesday is bound to be low. Coastline Cops and Robson Green Wild Swimming Adventure might be able to get OK audience, but ITV will definitely be below 20%, but then again BBC1 won't be much higher.

On Wednesday, Champions League should be OK for ITV, but Mister Eleven is bound to flop. But ITV's bumper weekend is likely to give them a further boost.

From there, it'll be BBC1 winning the primetime shares, surely, for the rest of the year. But can it win the whole of December?

It'll be a close run thing.

More details on ESPN's FA Cup contract here, I notice they have a 4 year deal which will put it out of sync with ITV's deal which expires in 2012.

According to this article,

"This season's FA Cup will continue to be shown by the FA's current broadcast partner ITV, who will show three live games from the third to the fifth rounds – one additional match – and all games from the quarter-final stage onwards."

So ITV this year will screen all 4 quarter finals, both semis and the final exclusively. That's quite a coup for one broadcaster, and a lot of football on top of Champions League, World Cup.

Wonder where the extra matches will go in the schedule ? ITV usually take their picks on Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon don't they ? Some FA Cup matches have aired on Setana on Friday evenings, so that's a possibility ?

It has never launched on a Sunday before, past launch days have always been either Wednesday,Thursday or Friday.

However both CBB3 and CBB5 had finale nights on Sunday.

It's going to be very close. Last year the first week in December was: 21.6% (BBC1)... 27.7% (ITV1) so a gap of about 6 points. For the entire month, it was quite a close average: 23.9% (BBC1)...23.1% (ITV1).

This month, ITV's already nearly 10 points ahead and this coming week will do better than last year due to the weekend X Factor treatment. So yeah, it's possible that ITV could sneak a December peak time win over BBC1.

A Big Brother series (celebrity or summer) has never started on a Sunday before. There's been some Sunday finals which have rated quite well, though.

But I don't think the CBB7 launch will break 5m this time around. The BBC and ITV possibly have good shows on that night (Wallander and Above Suspicion). BB's core audience might not be interested in those dramas, but I just can't see many casual viewers tuning in for the launch.

Yeah, quite a coup for ITV. Saturday 5pm-ish and Sunday 4pm-ish will be two of their match times without a doubt.

I suppose Friday's partly depend on what ITV is intending to air at 9pm on those weeks. If there's just repeats, then I think an 8:05pm kickoff time could happen. That means rescheduling the second Corrie episodes somewhere. But it might be too much hassle so they'll probably opt for the afternoon slot.

I dont think Friday night is a runner. The slots will be Sat pm, Sunday pm, Sat lunchtime & Sunday lunchtime IMO for the QFs. I would expect SFs to be on Sat pm & Sunday pm.

The extra game from R3 to R5 could set them up for a Sat pm, Sun pm and Saturday lunchtime slots policing permiting of course.

I can't see CBB making many ratings headlines this series. It's outgoing now, we already know that, so the figures are largely inconsequential. I expect its ratings will be nothing special throughout, but never bad.

The launch should do OK on a Sunday with BBC One & ITV1 normally skewing older.

Celebrity Big Brother in my view will probably have ~2/2.5m for most episodes, only ever getting ~3m against poor competition.

I must admit though, given the amount of drama ITV look like they are having in the New Year (and the amount of ~4m documentaries), I won't be surprised if ITV could sneak another primetime win in the New Year.

No. At the Edinburgh TV festival just after the announcement, pretty much every channel controller was asked and ruled themselves out of buying the rights.

1. The Big Bang Theory (CBS) - 5.7 - 14.72m
2. Two and a Half Men (CBS) - 5.1 - 15.16m
3. CSI: Miami (CBS) - 3.8 - 12.94m
4. How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - 3.5 - 9.15m
5. Accidentally on Purpose (CBS) - 2.9 - 8.30m

CBS takes the entire top 5 spots. FOX, without House this week, aired a Carrie Underwood special which did a reasonable 2.4 rating over 2 hours. ABC were down to 1.8 at 9pm with Find My Family not doing so well. Another 8pm Christmas special gave them their highest numbers of the night (2.7). NBC went with repeats.

The Big Bang Theory rating is amazing, should easily be #1 for the week. I think its previous series high was a 5.1. Two and a Half Men hit a season high as well. Not looking so good for Accidentally On Purpose which is losing lots of its lead-in from HIMYM (even moreso with adults 18-34).

CSI: Miami and Castle were down but I think that may be due to the new TNT series Men of a Certain Age which probably appealed to that demo that the two shows attract.

Rescheduling a Friday Corrie would be no problem whatsoever. They just stick one on on a Wednesday at 7.30.

There's about 11 weeks out of 12 in February-April next year when ITV has Wednesday night football on. So rescheduling Corrie episodes to Wednesdays would be a problem!

Like GeorgeS says, I'm not even sure if Friday night games are even an option anyway. There were 5 games in total last season per round between rounds 3-5 but apparently that's gone down to 4 this season, so the Friday games might have been scrapped.

Do you think it would be worth ITV buying the rights for Celebrity Big Brother in the UK? Surely it would cost next to nothing...

It would probably pull over 5 million viewers, if there's the right celebrities in there. I still think the series has pulling power, if there are good challenges and the right mix of celebrities.

Or perhaps this would mean reality TV overkill. But ITV have always found it tough to get any ratings successes in January, whereas Feb and March tend to do very, very well.

Might be worth considering for ITV2, if not ITV1.
