Coronation Street
This year has seen Coronation Street decline once again. I must say, despite some better efforts from production, the storylines have been pretty awful. The Tony/Maria storyline was extremely unrealistic, and I wouldn't be surprised if more people switched off. Also, it's been the one soap that has been messed around with this year. The new Thursday slot hasn't worked, and it's not exactly proving a worthwhile lead-in to The Bill, which seems to have a completely different audience nowadays, anyway.
At least it being the 50th anniversairy next year, the show will get more publicity and ITV will get a chance to turn a new leaf.
High: Its Monday episodes continue to be consistent, whilst the rest of the week suffers.
Low: Its transition to Thursday nights
Possible improvements:-
Give Coronation Street consistent start times for viewers, not messing them around. I'd personally advise a move to Monday (2), Wednesday, (sometimes as it has a lead-in from Emmerdale so should still be familiar to viewers as shown by its outings there recently), Friday at 7:30 and Sunday at 7:30. Dropping one episode on Wednesday just over half of the time could do the quality of the show some good. Also, soaps have to be unpredictably scheduled sometimes when a big storylines arises. So, ITV could make use of an hour episode on Wednesday's and Sunday's, where they don't get rivalry with EastEnders or established shows. Also, keep Coronation Street's extra outings on BGT and IAC finals week, as they work quite well.
EastEnders
EastEnders has generally had a poor year, perhaps better than Coronation Street, but still not great. Its storylines have been incredibly sensational at points, and perhaps a little unnecessary. Although, among these storylines, EastEnders still has the best creative team in my opinion, which can lead to a bit of variety. Last year, it was the Dot monologue. This year, there was the all-black episode and the Stacey mental health storyline. The latter was so believably portrayed, and makes Tony Gordon's panic attack storyline look laughable. However, there are too many returning characters, and the novelty of that is starting to wear off.
And that has shown in its ratings performance this year, which has not been all too inspiring. Lower than last year despite a bigger quantity of storylines this year, one would argue.
High: Despite an absence of juggernaut ratings, it hasn't completely collapsed when pitched against other soaps.
Low: It was unfortunate that its big wedding storyline was quite harshly blocked out by Emmerdale and Coronation Street, which was very sneaky on ITV's part.
Possible improvements:-
Perhaps less big storylines, as the hype is not being created anymore. The Lucas storyline, for example, has not been talked about enough. They should learn lessons from 'Who Shot Phil', and should focus on longer panning out storylines, that lead to a massive storyline (i.e. Phil Mitchell's relationship + alcoholism = he is very unpopular). And the great thing about that was...he survived. The Tom King storyline in Emmerdale did the same thing.
The Lucas storyline has not been explored enough, which is a shame. The Tony Gordon murder storylines on Corrie have also been pretty dense really.
However, the 25th Anniversairy episode gives the show an opportunity, like Corrie's 50th, to get more publicity and to turn a new leaf?
Emmerdale
Its best year in sometime. The new production team has given Emmerdale back some life, and has really struck gold in keeping with quirky traditions with the Dingles and other favourites, whilst creating intelligent storylines (such as the sexuality one with Aaron), which will definitely bring in a younger audience.
Even its 8pm outings have faired well. Also, its move away from the constant clash against EastEnders was a good one. Its OK for Emmerdale to clash with EastEnders in special episodes, but I would avoid it normally.
High: Its mammoth Winter ratings alongside high ratings for The One Show was evidence that Emmerdale could reign superior for a while yet, and it has a loyal audience.
Low: Some Wednesday's have been tough without the presence of Coronation Street (or any other soap at all) after it, and it doesn't fit into a football dominated schedule perhaps.
Possible improvements:-
There aren't many. Ratings have been very consistent, reflecting the quality of storylines. Despite it being pitched against a popular alternative in The One Show. This is why it has performed far better than the other soaps, because it has maintained and increased its viewing audience. The 8pm move has been a good short-term change for storylines, but I wouldn't advise it being anything long-term. Perhaps, an extra episode can be used sparingly on a Thursday, or hour specials can air. Or an hour special on Sunday or Wednesday is possible.
Obviously, this would mean ITV would have to sacrifice one other Emmerdale episode, and that can be the Wednesday one at various points of the year, where ITV can air a movie. Harry Potter, Batman Begins, Bond movies - they all work well in the 7-10pm slot. And if popular movies aired a few times a year, Emmerdale could make up for it with hourly episodes elsewhere.
One hopes Emmerdale can maintain its good form.
