I saw a bit of The X Factor last night (under similar circumstances to those which force GeorgeS to watch EastEnders on Christmas night
), and I was not terribly impressed with the two male contestants.I know the ratings were a bit under expectations last night, but I think the big disappointment will come in trying to sustain the winner's career, as it did with the 2007 winner. I can't even remember his name! |

SPOTY is quite a slick show and choosing to host it in an arena has created an exciting atmosphere.
It amazes me that BBC Sport have managed to produce a better entertainment-type show than the entertainment shows that are made by BBC Entertainment department ![]() .The BBC need a moment like that which brought in Michael Grade in 1984 if they are to revitalise things in that area. |

Thanks. I might go walk the budgie on Christmas night this time around to escape Eastenders. I think Joe would have the better career than Olly tbh but winning TXF is no guarantee of LT sucess. But there were one hit wonders long before TXF was around.
![]() I don't know why, but the female winners seem to do so much better than the men. Shayne Ward is still going well, as far as I know, but he's the only one of the three. Yet, Will Young is still going strong nearly eight years after Pop Idol, so maybe one of this year's two fellas will prove me wrong. ![]() I'm off to watch a bit of snooker.

Or kind old BBC2 have lined up Dad's Army and Blackadder The Third as a quality alternative to the depressing gloom on BBC1. Quote:

It's not suppose to mean everybody wondering "how the hell did this talentless bleeper manage to win?". |

10 million votes cast...anyone know how that compares to last year?? Should give us some indication of ratings...10 million seems EXTREMELY high to me!

TheXFactor: 10,000,000 votes... way more than Series 1 - 18 minutes ago from TweetDeck
...the comparison to Series 1, not last year.

I think that's for the entire series, hence...
They had 10 million for the final in Series 2 which was a record at the time... they probably just pipped that tonight. |

Going against SPOTY?, I can see the headlines now....
I love the benefit of hindsight in this thread once the ratings come in. Anyone would think The X Factor had dropped to 2m from the reaction on here. Everything seemed down last night TBH. Pneultimate Saturday before Christmas may have had something to do with I guess. As for the famous SPOTY v The X Factor: ITV1 were kind with an ad break, going at 8.56pm, right in time for the SPOTY to be revealed or so I thought. Instead, they were (surprise, surprise) running late, and even then they had to reveal Overseas Personality of the Year, have a montage of clips and then announce the top 3 talking to each. How much rubbish did they have in the previous hour and 25 to be running so behind??? |

SPOTY finished at about 21:05. Anyone who turned over straight after Giggs' name was announcement was greeted to Paul McCartney's performance beginning.
No surge on the National Grid, though. |

SPOTY was dire...i tried watching it but just couldnt get in to it, they started with Cricket- yeah i know we won the Ashes but its not something to hook the viewers in is it? Had they started with F1 or Football maybe it would have been better

The voting percentages are up for The X Factor BTW: http://xfactor.itv.com/_uploads/docu..._votestats.pdf Last edited by Fudd : 13-12-2009 at 22:28. Reason: got last year's result wrong :o |

Sports Personality of the Year certainly had the shock result. Maybe people couldn't stand the thought of a racing driver winning it two years in a row.

ITV put it up against The Sports Personaluty of the Year a few years back (2003? 2005?), and SPOTY went down to below 5m.
But in 2007 (which is more recent) SPOTY went up against the RVP and Emmerdale and Corrie, yet took a strong 6.86m in the officials. So it is capable of performing well against tough competition (although that doesn't necessarily mean it will this year). |
