Actually looking at it the whole article looks messed up with almost everything down on the actual ratings...I can't see what's gone so wrong

Staggering ratings for The X Factor.

I reckon that's enough to dispel the myth that people will only tune in for the star bookings. Anybody who watches is usually only interested in the result.

Great stuff for Harry Hill and FF as well. What a night for ITV1. Kudos to BBC1 for holding up so well in the face of that onslaught.

TXF's highest rating ever is 13.5m, for last years final result, so just slightly behind last nights 13.4m.

Interesting - ITV using a 60 second peak there, for 20:54! Not often that we get a 60 second peak reported! Broadcast reports the 5min peak was 14.8m for 20:50-20:55.


Ah yes, you're right. I was looking at the 13.2m figure that Media Guardian and BBC News reported last year, but I don't think ithey took the 10 minute over-run into account which DS did.

The equivalent results episode of TXF last year averaged 7.7m. So with last nights staggering 13.4m, the 2009 results three episode, is UP a massive 5.7m!!

It's incredible! each year when The X Factor/BGT returns I always think that it won't out do the series before, but yet every time it does!

FOX doing well out of the baseball and the World Series hasn't even started yet. Denting NBC's football somewhat and the combination of two New York teams on different channels probably didn't help.

To be fair EastEnders did trend on Twitter which I'd say is a better tool to measure what people are talking about than this thread.

I'd agree about Wallace and Gromit though - it did phenomenally well in a well placed slot on Christmas Day but I don't think it defines watercooler television in the same way as The X Factor or EastEnders do.

To be fair in the end the result usually is correct. I think John and Edward only have a couple more weeks in them really.

And to be fair to Cowell, although he didn't like it he was in no doubt that the public vote has to be respected.


Is it still looking like they'll just be a show on Saturday for the final. Not having the final three on the Saturday, then the last two on the Sunday, seems madness to me With probably 18-20m looking likely, stupid to constrict that to one night.

I thought this was an interesting comment-the assumption that everyone is talking about X Factor. I work in a large office and I have to say its not a topic at all in my experience. You have to remember that the hugely impressive audience figures are still a minority-though a much bigger minority than anything else.

You are right in one way though-the almost hypnotising hype means that pretty much everyone knows of X Factor-and many have an opinion. You get as many people saying they hate is love it-though a percentage of both those views will be saying it as a knee jerk response.

Britain's Got Talent had a slight problem of Paul O'Grady leaving for Channel 4 and on paper, it doesn't sound like a award winning format but then again how many hit shows don't sound great on paper and end up doing fantastic. It was the success of America's Got Talent which got people interested.

I think American Idol started off as a summer show which grew and grew but it took a few seasons to become a monster hit. Even DWTS started as a summer show before moving to the main season.

talkbackTHAMES is quite prominient for a production company that not inhouse like BBC Productions and ITV Studios, they have several hit shows on the various channels and lots of commissions.

In ratings terms Im not so sure. the BBC has had approcahing ten million for the live show in the last years (I might be out there but a large share whatever). Iv no doubt Edinburgh will be spectacular but Nortons show should be live and I doubt the combination the BBC has chosen will reap the same rewards.

You are right about this thread-we talk about Countryfile alot on this thread too, but I dont imagine its ever trended anywhere.

Fairly quiet. Idol didn't win in any of the demos last night. The big story on Sundays though is the low numbers for 60 Minutes. This is by far its worst rated year in its 30 year history, causing Nine yet more headaches.

Even in 2007 against the hugely successful Kath & Kim it was averaging 1.4m.

On the contrary. It's madness not to have the final all on the one night; they'd lose the momentum.

I am speechless by TXF's figure. I thought it peaked last year but it just performs better and better everytime. Exceptional for ITV.

I can see the hype and massive viewing figures for it dying down in a few years though, in a similar way to Big Brother.

Is that the same version which was shown over here a few months back?

Also, why are GO! and Nine's share combined when there are two separate channels?

Collision, apparently, has been confirmed as week beginning Monday 9th November. An Audience with The Osmonds will air on Wednesday 11th November @ 20:00. I suspect that means Corrie will be airing at @ 19:30 on that day to make up for the IAC episode which they will lose.

But people aren't just not going to tune in on the Sunday are they?

The Sunday show has consistently been rating higher than the Saturday edition and if it airs all on one night it will have to be scheduled around Strictly which will make things difficult. Especially they end up partially clashing (Strictly will be having two shows by then won't it?).

I think ITV will push for a two-night event. Have the third place contestant announced on the Saturday and then leave the final two to battle it out on the Sunday.

I honestly do not believe that the viewers were tuning in to watch BBC1's crappy New Year programme in which Nick Knowles and Myleen Klass (2007) or Kate Silverton (2008) introduce a bit of ice-skating and some musical acts with sound problems.

Your 10m peak, which I think is about right, will be at midnight when people tune in to see the New Year arrive.

OzTam have been grouping them like that for a while now. They are combining the main channels with their digital offspring. (So ABC1/2, Seven, Nine/GO!, Ten/One, SBS One/Two)

Bit unfair on Seven really since they only have the one channel at the moment. But Seven would be quick to boast in their daily press release if their single channel beat both Nine and GO!, which happens quite regularly actually.

Anyway, not for much longer will they be the odd one out. 7TWO launches on Australian television at noon on (Sunday) 1st November. Programming includes first runs of hit US fare such as Lost, Ugly Betty and 24, as well as what they claim to be "the very best of British television" including Heartbeat, A Touch of Frost, Gavin and Stacey and Five's (now axed) motoring show Fifth Gear. So basically, it will consist almost purely of imports like 99% of digital channels over here.

Meanwhile Nine have nabbed the Australian rights to Top Gear from SBS. That includes both the UK version from series 2 onwards and also the Aussie version. Transmission will begin in early 2010.

You see, in this amazing technological world you can be speechless yet still make yourself heard!

Its an interesting one-will there be a tipping point and will the massive rise in viewership lead to a similar decline. Its hard to see that happening now, although I once thought the same about Who Wants to be a Millionaire when it was getting 19 million viewers.
Maybe it will revolve around how long Simon Cowell wants to be involved as alot of the soul of the show seems to stem from his presence.
