Waterloo Road well done on last week. Thats surprising. The Carpenters rating is about 1.5m higher than I expected.

I would think the Sky Sports effect of the Ireland vs France game would be much higher than the RTE overflow impact in NI which at best would rate at 150-200k in my opinion.

Sounds like car crash TV, maybe people couldn't turn off

I watched it and I didn't think it was too bad. It wasn't meant to be "Stars In Your Eyes" it was different artits with their own unique take on the Carpenters classics. It was always going to attract the fans of the various artists involved so they would be more than happy with the performances given. At least they all sang live (with the exception of The Saturdays) and the perfomances weren't carbon copies of the original songs - Thats not what the show was about. I liked the little clips before each artists performed it was an okay show for midweek.

Interesting to see IACGMOOH down to 8.0m.

I really do think the Katie Price addition this year has backfired.

People have got their pound of flesh from Katie too early on in the series what with her continuous trials. Not sure how this can be topped given the other celebrities are very much in the backseat so far.

I'm suspecting ratings will slide further but settle at the 7.0-7.5m mark pre the final.

PETER FINCHAM INTERVIEW in Broadcast

http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/b...008313.article

Quote:
“On his shopping list are more big entertainment programmes for Fridays and Sundays as well as the traditional Saturday night slots, one-hour mainstream comedies and a “varied diet” of dramas.”

We havent seen much "big entertainment" on Friday nights yet from ITV1

Quote:
“ITV’s Christmas schedule this year will include several pantomimes; A Night of Heroes, showcasing the Sun Military Awards; an Ant and Dec Christmas special; Piers Morgan’s Review Of The Year and Harry Hill’s alternative view in TV Burp Review Of The Year.

Coronation Street stars will take on Emmerdale cast members in All Star Family Fortunes.

Four single dramas will also be screened - Mr Eleven, Sleep With Me, The Fattest Man In Britain and An Englishman In New York, alongside new episodes of Marple.”

Mr Fincham likes his pantomines. Cant recall the last one on a primetime terrestial channel

It had an earlier start. I'd imagine the average from 9pm to 10pm would be higher.

It now has 5 straight days of lead-ins from Corrie and X Factor, so it'll be fine.

The banter in work, from mates etc, even fans of Katie are feeling a bit bored of 'the Katie show', and feel it's very contrived, still it'll be getting 14-16m lead ins from TXF so should hold onto at least 10m those 2 nights, and Corrie leadins should hold decently too?

It's very very poor this season. I absolutely love the show but I'm struggling this series

I'm a Celebrity's rating looks poor - but don't forget it started at 20:30. I suspect the first half an hour brought the average down. Good for the Carpenters programme before it.

Poor night for BBC One. I don't think Waterloo Road dipped because of the Carpenters, I think it dipped because of....

France vs Republic of Ireland - Ratings
- Programme Average: 976,000
- Match Average: 1.2m (20:00 to 22:30)
- Peak: 1.45m between 22:00 to 22:30

Another shocking night for Channel 4 and Five though.

Tks. So, if we add those all up, it's about a 10% drop from the series premiere? Sounds like the same sort of thing that happened last year (I think there was a BBC3 preview then as well...).

If only we could find out how many iPlayer views it gets, we could have a complete picture...

It would have been the pantos ITV did at the end of the nineties, written by Simon Nye and filmed in front of a live audience. The first was on Christmas Day 1998 and didn't do too well but the second year it was on a Sunday teatime and did alright. The last, back on Christmas Day 2000, was simply to fill a gap opposite Titanic and did pretty well - but Titantic didn't do much either.

As for Celebrating the Carpenters being a pilot for a potential series, how is it any different to ...Mania, which they did about twenty episodes of? I remember 80s Mania was kept on the shelf for about two years.

UK TV Guide has updated with schedules for week beginning Saturday 12th December. Not too much stands out in the week, as most of ITV's schedule is glittered with 'To Be Announced', but here are the provisional weekend schedules:

Saturday 12th December
BBC One
18:05 - Merlin
18:50 - Strictly Come Dancing
20:05 - The National Lottery Draws
20:15 - Casualty
21:05 - The Impressions Show with Culshaw and Stephenson
21:35 - Strictly Come Dancing: Results Show
22:05 - BBC News
22:25 - Match of the Day

ITV1
18:30 - Regional News
18:45 - ITV News
19:00 - New You've Been Framed!
19:30 - Harry Hill's TV Burp
20:00 - The X Factor
21:30 - TBA
22:30 - ITV News

Sunday 13th December
BBC One
18:00 - Life (R)
19:00 - Sports Personality of the Year 2009
21:00 - Small Island
22:30 - BBC News
22:55 - Match of the Day

ITV1
18:15 - Regional News
18:30 - ITV News
18:45 - Harry Hill's TV Burp (R)
19:15 - All Star Family Fortunes
20:00 - The X Factor
21:00 - TBA
22:00 - ITV News

Obviously the thing to note is the two TBA's. We can assume that the Susan Boyle show is on the Sunday. The only thing that could change is the length of The X Factor, whether it maybe 90 minutes from 19:30 to 21:00 or even 20:00 to 21:30.

I recently posted the overall monthly ratings which showed BBC1 and ITV1 had both had a very strong September and October whilst Channel 4 (and to a lesser extent Five) had struggled very badly.

The first two weeks of November show a continuation of this trend - C4 overall share is 6.1% in both the first two weeks of November compared to 6.9% overall for November 2008.

And the poor numbers keep continuing.

I think what is happening is as follows:

1) As everybody knows, multichannel ratings growth has had a major adverse effect on all 5 terrestrials.

2) There are now signs that BBC1 and ITV1 are "fighting back" (not growing but stabilising) primarily due to the success of high profile "big hitting" programmes.

3) The result is a collosal squeeze on Channel 4 and Five - they are under firece attack on two fronts (ie multichannel and BBC1/ITV1). Both are having to make big cuts and they don't have the resources or "impact" to fight back.

Look in particular at the Channel 4 line on the BARB chart:

http://www.barb.co.uk/graph/viewingShare?_s=4

We may be moving to a position where the TV "ecology" is:

- two big channels (ie BBC1/ ITV1)
- everything else

This is the sort of game that would have been perfect for Five.

The French Football Federation had trouble selling the rights and ended up selling to RTE and Sky only the day before for a massively lower price than they wanted.

So the game was available but Five couldn't afford it. They can't compete.

It is rumoured to have cost 'several million', RTE have not disclosed what they paid for it! Would Five have that budget for one game?

Reports say it was sold in the end for 600,000 Euros in TOTAL to RTE and Sky. Split not reported of how that broke down between RTE and Sky.

”

Channel 4 have also taken a deliberate decision to drop a lot of higher rating lifestyle & reality programming in order to go up market as they try to secure government funding as an alternative PSB to the BBC

WOW that's pretty good! On Sunday they were saying RTE were going to have to pay several million for it, the rumour mill has been going into over drive, thanks for those figues mlt11.

Really surprised how well Celebrating the Carpenters did, I thought it would do low 4m. IAC was down although I wonder if the emphasis on Katie Price has turned viewers off? BBC One had a good night with Waterloo Road and Spooks while BBC Two had a good with Making of Modern Britain and a repeat of Top Gear doing well and even Buzzcocks is faring okay, Channel 4 and Five had terrible nights and I bet both can't wait until January when their big hitters return.

Wonder if a third of Modern Britain series is on the cards, it is down on the last one but still a decent performer.

Was looking on the Wall to Wall website and it appears they are doing a UK version of Find My Family for ITV1 which has been a success in Australia and about to launched in America. I think this show could do well given how successful WDTYA have done.

Shocked at those Carpenters ratings! I think cutting Emmerdale to 30 minutes on Tuesday has been good for it but makes the 8pm slot even harder to fill on Tuesdays. I wonder would this still have done well with a lead in from something like Countryfile?

It was definitely promoted a lot.

I'm surprised at the length of the X Factor shows, both shorter than I would have expected.

I hope it does turn out to be a success as the BBC's light entertainment output at the moment is quite poor in comparison to what ITV has to offer.”

One thing which bodes well for BBC entertainment in 2009 is that they've got good people making them. Simon Fuller/Nigel Lythgoe on SYTYCD and then Talkback Thames producing the Lloyd Webber show.

But 7 episodes of SYTYCD is a bit short and as you say, it skews very young which is fine for ITV but not so good for the BBC. But with Arlene, Nigel and Cat all involved I think it will gain some wider press attention here.

I think it will get around 5-6m (then again, I said that about Britain's Got Talent in 2007!).

Any ITV drama executives reading may wish to look away...

AMC (the US cable channel behind Mad Men) aired The Prisoner in 3 2 hour blocks from Sunday-Tuesday. The ratings are not pretty:

Sunday - 2.2m
Monday - 0.95m
Tuesday - 0.95m
