I have a Samsung Eco Green 1TB SATA disk in my 5810. Works like a charm, is quieter and has lower power consumption
Which exact model is this - Amazon list two of these

500G SATA drive from eBuyer £40
IDE - to Sata converter £3
Looks like Ill be going down this route now my DHD4000 is a little harder to use.

Does a SATA and IDE disk have the same mounting holes, so the disk is not loose inside the case of the Toppy? Please do you have a link to the IDE<>SATA converter you used.

Will the Toppy reformat a disk I put in it to a format it needs?

Many Thanks.

I used a 2.5" disc I had laying around and it works perfectly, I found two of the holes on the drive lined up with the ventilation holes cut in the drive mounting bracket. I used some plastic spacers to raise the drive up from the mounting plate.

The end result looked like this.

The adaptor I used was this one. I bought two of them last July and they've been fine. Can't comment on any recent changes to the design though.

Toppy formats as necessary on first boot.

Well, despite the negative reports about the 5810, I have decided to retire my 160gb 5800 and get one. My 5800 is now 4 years old, and is starting to show its age, so I feel I needed to upgrade. The increase in hard disk size to 500gb was the clincher. I am sure that many, many people have gotten machines that work perfectly, but obviously quite a few haven't. Just hope I am one of the lucky ones, as my 5800 is one of my favourite pieces of equipment that I have.

I quite like the 5810, it's been fine for me apart from a cycling reboot when the EPG.MEI got corrupted and MyStuff kept crashing. It seems a little unresponsive but that appears to be a Topfield feature. I like the display on the front (with the MPLite TAP) and the unit looks more stylish than the 5800. The lack of memory is a bit of an issue but I have around 7MB free with MyStuff loaded up. Other than that it just works. Remote is horrible - I got a LogiTech one instead. I bought a second 5810 and gave my one to my parents (as I knew it worked) and the replacement has been as reliable as the original - no problems at all.

Both were diskless direct from Turbosat @ £80 delivered. Bargain.

Well now the DHD4000 has an EPG problem (I know may be resolved by Sony), and it is is glitchy in 8k DVB-T mode, I have now acquired a 5810 to replace it. The price of the HD DVB-T2 boxes is still high right now, so think I will staying SD for now. So I could be looking for advice on TAPS to be used from this forum ... but I will try searching forums first for answers.

MyStuff6 will give you lots of flexibility and reliability. I would go to www.toppy.org.uk and have a GOOD look around

Sadly, the 5810 I bought off eBay was delivered today, but it was a 5800, so its going back as I want the HDMI and 500GB found in the 5810.

Well, I got my 5810. Once I loaded up mystuff and a few other taps I like, it behaves more or less like my 5800. Only problem I have encountered is that I cannot get the 1080i to work. I can get 576 or 720 but if I change the setting to 1080i, I get a message on my telly saying an unsupported signal has been detected. Now, I know a 1080i signal does work on my telly, as I have a Virgin V+ box which outputs that signal. Tried it on a different hdmi cable and got the same message. So, I am a bit stumped. The picture on 720 is very good though. And like everyone else says, the remote is rubbish. The one with the 5800 was much better, shame it doesn't work with the 5810.

My 5800 is showing signs of PSU problems so is being returned under warranty (nationwide cc 3rd year) but if as I suspect they decide to pay out rather than fix is it better to go for a 5810 rather than finding a 5800 (turbosat have a graded 5800 for £95 or a 5810 diskless for £50, or could buy new for £199 from play.

Or what do people reckon about the Humax freesat PVR. Have a dish (unused) get perfect freeview signal.

Or fix the PSU problems for under a tenner.

Why not set it to 576 and let the TV do the work? It's not as if you're receiving an HD signal, and I'm given to understand that it's not a particularly good idea to have both units scaling.

Because its still had heavy use for 2.5+ years and is insured for a full refund if they decide not to fix it.

If the 5810 diskless is a better option (presume its still a pata drive required or a sata/pata adapter with the hdmi then may well go with that, or get my cash back, buy a new 5810 and have a new 3 year warranty (2year plus 1 year through nationwide) for no net cost

A new 5810 is widely considered to not be as good as an old 5800.

As expected (although not understood) Pinnacle have paid out on the Topfield, (£215) so if anyone has an idea of getting either
A: A graded 5800 from Turbosat (£69.99 currently) with 3 month warranty
B: A 5810 probably new from somewhere like Play £200
C: Possibly a FoxsatHDR as I have a sky dish currently unused which I am fairly certain works
Thanks

I think C: would be my inclination, although if you don't have already be prepared to change the LNB for a Quad and add the second cable.

After finding out that the Foxsat will not record from the buffer then my wife has veto'd this machine. I am probably going for the 5810 over the 9300T despite the additional cost due to the familiarity after having the 5800

Quite understandable.
Just got the 5810 from Dixons for £199.99 with 3% Quidco, so look forward to loads more stupid questions when it arrives, might need to be a day off work to set it up
