Anyone heard the new George Michael single? I thought he might manage some sort of return to form, but he seems to be stuck in a bland loop, with not much improvement. And for some reason he can't seem to get out of singing in that weird, bass-free way he started with fast love (which I actually did like, but nothing of his since). There's a couple of moments in the song that have something, but most of it is forgettable.

The video is boring too, alot of computer effects, which might have impressed a few years ago, and lot of people messing about on a few couches.

yeah - agree there - only heard it the once, but it did seem a bit bland and insipid. the album got a good review in Q, but i'm not sure how that much means.

he's never been the same since he adopted his Emperor Ming look.

Maybe he needs a flash of inspiration?

I disagree...I think George is certainly on the path to refinding the plot.

Radio 2 have been playing "Amazing" for a few weeks now and while its not a spectacular return to form, its on the road to it and eminently more listenable than "Shoot The Dog", and isn't a cover version either.

Of all the new singles released this week its my favourite (possibly an indication of my age of course ) and much to my amazement I am probably going to buy his album when it comes out

The more I listen to it the better I like it. The first time I heard it I wasn't too keen but now it's growing on me.

for my money he's done nothing good since 'listen without predjudice'.he is resting on his laurels, taking the lazy gay disco(yawn!) route.makes me nostalgic for wham!(just kidding).

Actually, though, the songs he wrote in the Wham! days were much better tunes (albeit cheesy!) He didn't need to distort his voice or set them against repetitive beats.

A lot of those songs are still considered party classics. Do you really think anything he's done in recent times will be considered classic in 20 years time?

I did say "party classics" though. "Freedom" and "Last Christmas" are better songs than anything he's done recently.

I though his best tune was "Freedom", which was a while after his Wham days. As well as "Faith" and "Father Figure" and "Careless Whisper" for a smoocher. Some of his older stuff, like Freedom, would fit much better with current musical trends. Guess you've got to respect him to an extent, for not following the hurd.

I don't dislike his current tune, I can listen to it, but it just doesn't have strong enough hooks to be something I'll remember 10 minutes later, nevermind 10 years later (the "your Amazingggg" main line sounds pretty weak), and sounds too much like fast love. In fact I ended up humming fast love a few minutes after hearing it, a few days ago.

I think Listen Without Prejudice was the highlight of his solo career. Some of the stuff on the new album is good, but not as complete as Prejudice was. He rekindles old lyrics a bit too often in his new songs. He seems slightly out of touch with popular taste too, as the remixes of his tracks often sound better than the originals (Star People for example).

I listened to the new album in the car this morning. Admittedly, I did skip past Freek and Shoot The Dog (does anyone else feel short-changed when previos singles appear on a new album?), but I can see it becoming a permanent fixture in my CD changer. Of course you can't compare it with his Wham! and Faith heyday, but I still think it's a fantastic CD. Go dig out and listen to the A-Side of Faith - it's awesome. I remember listening to it every waking hour of the day when it came out in 1987. Do I have time to sit and listen to a CD for a week now? No. So my perception of it will be different. The only people who would do that are teenagers, and they won't be listening to a 40yr old poof on their MP3 players!! My point is that George's audience has aged with him, and an older audience isn't going to get all hyped-up because he's brought out a new CD or expect him to be jumping around with his shuttlecocks. It's a mature album for a mature audience.

Patience will rank alongside Dido, Norah Jones and Katie Melua as Middle Of The Road music for 40 year olds. It's a shame because he is capable of doing so much more.

He claims to be one of the only pop stars to be moving forward with his music but he doesn't seem to have progressed past 96's Older. It's more of the same and it is dull.

how dull? Well he sings a few lines over Flawless by The Ones (from a couple of years ago) - not a sample but the entire song - and that is supposedly a pop star who is "moving forward"

Let's not mention the painfully naff lyrics either.........

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
