How Can a Girl-Group Do Well On X Factor?
I've started this discussion because i considered Miss Frank to be the best girl-group ever on X Factor. But they only got to week 3 of the competition.
I'm just wondering if a girl-group could do well ever again. The furthest a girl-group has ever got on XF is fifth place - and that was Hope ![]() This is what sort of girl-group i think could do well: Well, it's clear the most talented female singers are normally black on XF and the music industry itself has lot's of credible black acts. I also think a black girl-group could easily have a great image (a la Destiny's Child). Then there is the number of girls. Well a duo is never going to be commercial (besides Siren ) and i think a five-piece is too difficult to showcase all their personalities. I would definitely go with three. Now it might seem like i've just described Miss Frank but i think a group just like them could do well if they had been together for a while to give time for their vocals to blend and mix and also to strengthen the chemistry/dynamics. What do you think? I'll be interested to hear opinions cos i'm starting to think that if Miss Frank can't get far, no girl-group can. |

I asked a similar question yesterday on another thread & I came to the conclusion that there is little or no point in having girl groups on The X-Factor, as there doesn't appear to be the fanbase for them.
They get judged far more harshly than any other category & they almost have to be like Destiny's Child just to make it to week 4! ![]() Meanwhile, the likes of Jedward & Lloyd are voted through each week & they haven't put in one single decent performance yet! |

Valid points, although I think their colour isn't really an issue - good singers are good singers. They just have to be likeable without simply being 'girl next door' - girl bands have to have a little extra imo. They need to have proper exposure on the show from the very beginning otherwise a fan base will not build up. They need to be young, pretty (but not too pretty or girls will not vote for them) - this was a confusion I had with Kandy Rain, Louis seemed to think that "oh all the boys will love them because they were strippers and we'll dress them provocatively" but the majority of boys/men do not vote on the xfactor, so you need to win the girls over!

I know there would be less chance of a shock exit but it would actually make it a 'credible' competition. The only problem is that the judges would probably vote tactically (well Simon and Louis would) but it would give groups in general a better chance and fit boys/crap acts less chance. |

Fantastic point! Therefore, i think the voting system needs to be changed. I think after an act performs, all the judges (bar the mentor) rank the performance out of ten and then there's a leaderboard (similar to SCD). Then the leaderboard and the public voting is merged together to give the result.

Even though strictly copies them, I think they would find it degrading the other way around. |

a girl group would need to use the girl power gimmick and say were going it for the girls and get the girls on there side! i also think they need to be girl next door types for girls to vote for them

This is obviously my opinion and i personally seem to prefer the black singers (Miss Frank, Alexandra, Leona, Maria...) so that's probably not what others think, if you get what i mean

I don't want to sound distasteful here but i think colour sub-consciously sways people in general. Don't get me wrong, the public don't think "Oh they are black i'm gonna vote for them" it's just that if you had a white girl-group (W4, GirlBand), it's very hard to get a strong image across without looking like Misfits. Whereas with a black girl-group, i think the image can come naturally and black diva powerhouses are adored on this show - so having an act of three of them would be very popular i think. They just need the harmonies and chemistry.

They need to be more like Girls Aloud/The Saturdays
Not in terms of singing ability, but marketablity (pretty sure that's not a word, by the way) Girls Aloud managed to out sell a "hot boy band" in one of these shows and have gone to become the biggest girl band in the UK and a huge career from the show - it's more than possible for the same to happen in the X factor. The problem is that a lot of the girl bands aren't that good. I think the thing that made Girls Aloud and The Saturdays good - and the Hope - who went the furthest in the X Faftor, is that they were all manufactured. Most bands that audition were friends before who decided to start a group, not people who decided to start a group and then became friends and I think that is where the problem lies. A lot of groups don't seem to have a good look or personality. And of course, being mentored by Louis Walsh never helps - that's why Girls Aloud kicked him out! |

I get what you're saying, again it's hard to say anything about colour without starting a massive storm on here is it?
![]() I just find that balck artists in general seem more commercial and credible. The only great/talented girl-groups i can think of are TLC and Destiny's Child (maybe even Mis Teeq) and they are all black... |

Trust me if a band like GA/Saturdays auditioned, they wouldn't get past the first live show. I think you make a good point about Hope though. I think their USP was the fact that they had the huge publicity of being put together (a first for XF). People gained interest but the truth is they weren't all that. They only made 5th place cos the judges saved them FOUR times. If Miss Frank had huge exposure before the live shows (more than they did), they could have built up a bigger fanbase (as a previous poster said). I bet that if any other judge got the groups, Miss Frank would have gone further. |

I hope Cheryl gets the groups next year (assuming she and the show returns)
I think she could probably do the best with them than any of the others judges, as I said Louis Walsh is one of the big problems. He has said himself he can't work with girl groups |

He has said himself he can't work with girl groups Cheryl should have been the mentor i think. SHe could have nurtured Miss Frank. Anyway, here is an article about Miss Frank in the Sun. It kinda fits in well with this topic http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...girlbands.html |

How can a girl band do well on the X Factor...............?
They can learn to sing in tune - a feat that none of them yet seem to have been able to manage!!! |

I have always wondered why girl groups never do well on the show, when bands like Girls Aloud and The Saturdays are sooo popular ! I honestly think the format of the show just isn't suited to bands full stop tbh. The only reason why it appears that boy bands do better is because they are able to get the teenage girl vote. I'm not saying that JLS are not talented, because they really are imo and deserve all their success, but the fact that they are gorgeous really helped them on the show ! The most important thing is getting the votes.. doesn't matter how talented you are, as J&E are showing (don't get me wrong i love them as people, but they are no way more talented than the other singers).
Whenever i see a band in the auditions or bootcamp i always get so excited to see them in the live shows.. like when i heard Bad Lashes last year singing Wonderwall at judges houses i absolutely loved it ! And thought that they would be a great girl-indie band.. but then on the first live show they came across as sooo bland. I think part of the problem is Louis Walsh (as much as i love him, he is rubbish with girl bands), and seeing as he has had the groups 4/6 times, this is probs why girlbands have never done well. When Simon had them in S4 he managed to get Hope to the final 5 which is a massive achievement tbh ! (Hate to big him up )That's why i am SO dissappointed Miss Frank got voted out They were the most original, unique girl band that has ever been on the XF.. i personally am a huge fan of the rapping and thought the fact they didn't quite gel together made them so special.. i just love them ! Hope they stay together but i doubt they will

For success, all members must:
- be very thin - be conventionally pretty - be glamorous - dress sexy without looking "slutty" - do upbeat pop numbers - try and sing well, but if you don't, whatever - just focus on looking "fierce", darling |

There is a stigma attached to girl-groups which is "if you are in a girl-group, you can't sing" Haha if you believe Miss Frank sang in tune then you are sadly mistaken. Go back and listen to their vocals, especially the larts where they attempted to sing in unison, as that is where it shows the most. All this conspiracy about girl groups never doing well is absolute rubbish. Just look at the charts to see successful girl groups - and it's definately not guys that fancy them that are buying their records! The problem is that the girl groups on the x factor are not very good! Simple as that. If they sang well, in tune, with decent harmonies then people would vote for them. And just for the record - people like me are not the problem. The people that are the problem are the ones who know nothing about music, and start spouting off ridiculous reasons why no girl groups have done well. The people who happen to know better know the real reason! |

Miss Franks sing off was AWFUL. And their other performances were not very harmonious at all. Miss Frank had the advantage of being likeable but they blew it on talent. They needed more time to work as being a group and their harmonies but they werent amazing any of them really. They came across as trying to shine individually especially Graziela (is that the shorter tubby one?).
