I don't like them much either. He seems to be a good dancer, but as someone else said, Mr Plastic, and even worse Mr Cocksure Plastic.
I can't stand Natalie, she irritates me every time she opens her mouth, I can't put my finger on why, maybe it's the sense of humour bypass, or her competitiveness, I really don't know. She annoys me. I think their "unpopularity" might be partially caused by her not having a fan base like most of the other pros have. |

That is a good point sliver - the established pro's have their own support, so people might follow celebs that they otherwise wouldn't,as they are dancing with the favoured pros.
Of the new professionals this year, Aliona went out with Rav early on, Katya is teamed with a very popular guy and has a likeable character too. Natalie seems very "hard" and focused, so along with Ricky's arrogance, it's not a good combination popularity- wise. |

To be fair, I think that in the quotes Ricky is only saying that the voters love an underdog. He doesn't mention Tuffers either. It's the paper that is saying he's complaining about not being popular. He doesn't say he isn't popular. He's saying the audience generally seem to prefer someone who learns through the show, which is a fair comment, though it isn't true that if you trip up you are more likely to win - that's a bit disrespectful to the people who have won. I didn't see series one and I'd say Darren was a journey, Mark R maybe, but Alesha, Jill and Tom definitely weren't.
The complaining about his long hours though, is him, and he's made that point enough. Tess will have to stop saying he doesnt' want sympathy about it now. ETA: wow, just read the blog. Presumably Natalie has told him he's the only one since he obviously doesn't know what samba rolls are. She's doing him no favours if she is telling him stuff like that. Wow. Quote:
Everyone has voted us through this far so i guess its only right i do my part and dont let them down,so bring on the pain,i wont let excuses get in the way. Big Phil had an opperation and danced that week,we all have problems so lets just get on with it,i didnt use it as an excuse
Very easy to read that as 'Phil used his op as an excuse, I, being wonderful, didn't.May not be how he meant it, but very easy to read it that way. |

RICKY Whittle may have the moves but he's not at all happy.
The Hollyoaks star, who has been wowing the judges on Strictly Come Dancing every week, is upset that the public doesn't seem to like him. Ricky, 27, is the bookies' clear favourite to win the show. But he's angry that lovable underdogs - like cricketer Phil Tufnell - seem to get more support from viewers. And he claimed that he and professional dance partner Natalie Lowe would be much more popular if they fell over in the middle of a routine. Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, he said: "Britain likes an underdog. That's the way it is. "If someone does well they don't like them. "If this was America or Australia they'd be cheering us [myself and Natalie] on because we are doing well. "If I'd come out the first week and tripped up, then carried on the routine, the whole nation would be going 'ah, bless him'. "It's great that everyone is so sympathetic but I think they need to just appreciate that everyone is doing the same job and trying their hardest. "And if we are doing well, embrace us, get behind us. "I've not been trained in dancing, I'm not in my comfort zone." But the soap actor went on to reveal he isn't actually putting in as many hours as his fellow contestants. "When we do rehearse it's at the end of the day after 12 hours of filming Hollyoaks," he says. "Natalie gets me an emotional wreck after I've done ten scenes. "It's the toughest thing I've ever done juggling dancing with filming. "It's crazy. I'm doing crazy hours, I'm exhausted and there isn't one part of my body that doesn't ache - but I wouldn't change it for the world." |

I agree with some of the other posters... I think that this pairing are not as popular as others because of the fact that Natalie is so driven and also seems to lack personality.
I can't explain it but both her and Katya are irritating me (not quite sure how or why) although of the two Katya is least irritating. Yes Ricky is a good dancer but I really cant stand this me me me attitude all the time... and on reading that blog, it could make my blood boil if I wasnt totally feeling laid back and horizontal today... |

Where's the backlash against the backlash?
No other contestant is under the same scrutiny as Ricky W. thus far. Everyone else, apart from Laila & Craig, has flown well below the radar. I'm not justifying the publicity - just acknowledging he's the story. Admittedly writing a blog for all to see is possibly asking for criticism but he's 27 and is part of the blogging/twitterati generation (the grammar and spelling drives me mad but I'm an old fogey). I don't think the majority on here are the demographic he's writing his blog for. I think the criticism is going a bit far when he's being questioned as to whether he thinks he's more stoic than somebody who has had an operation - dissecting overmuch methinks.

Ricky does annoy me, and guiltily, I can say there is no rational reason for this. It annoyed me that he was so good from day one - what's the point of a competition when one contestant is already booked a place in the final? His partner Nat also got on my nerves, that big grin, the assurdness that she had a star. As I said, it's all very irrational!
![]() I do sympathise with Ricky fans this year though - I supported Emma Bunton the year she was on, and the backlash against her on here was ferocious. One couldn't make a pro-Emma comment without being labelled a "bunny" and mocked. So stay strong Ricky fans! One thing I must note, how can anyone who spent 4 years reading undergraduate law at a top university have such awful grammar and punctuation? |

He joined a 4 year course, but he quit the course to pursue acting.
On the BBC website, it says: Quote:
Despite being scouted by both Arsenal and Celtic, an injury ended any hopes he had to pursue a professional career and so Ricky began a four year law degree at Southampton University. Whilst there he began modelling, securing some high profile campaigns. So he left in 2002, which means he was only there for a year or two. So I guess he wasn't there for long.
In 2002, he successfully auditioned for Sky One's Dream Team and played bad boy Ryan Naysmith. He enjoyed the filming experience so much that he decided to forgo his career in the law courts and opted instead to pursue a career on screen. |

It does help as Phil has always been popular and people like him. I think that helps her personality come out more and shows they get on (even if she does have her gripes). I agree with your comments about Natalie. I find her the hardest pro to 'like' Quote:

I have investigated his assertion that only he and Natalie did 'Samba Rolls' and he is wrong ........All the Samba couples did Samba rolls (except Craig and Flavia) even Jo and Brendan so goodness knows why he wrote that unless its a Natalie invention to keep him thinking he is the best.

Maybe he meant he is the only one who did them well. And that is subjective.

I'm probably wrong but I don't recall jade and Ian doing samba rolls - she got into position where it looked like they were going to do it but didn't. Same I thought for Laila and Anton with the cameraman whizzing around to make it look like a roll. Jo attempted one I think but it was terrible and Ricky did make a good attempt at the samba roll - the only one to do it properly.
I don't really understand the criticism about it being all about him. It's his personal blog - who else is it going to be about? I'm fairly neutral on all the dancers and finding it really hard to figure out why everyone seems to dislike him and Nat so much. Seems all fairly irrational to me. |

Jade and Ian's Samba - 48s Laila and Anton's roll - 1:14s As someone else commented, if he means they didnt do the move well ("compared to ME") that's even worse, but certainly in keeping with the tone of earlier comments, so doesnt surprise me. |

My samba is rusty but Jade at 48secs isn't a roll and Laila's footwork doesn't fit a samba roll either.
