I think all of the sporting figures are "known" globally but I don't know whether they are considered famous in other countries. In terms of recognition alone, the Spice Girl has to be up there. She's certainly a lot more famous than the Mis-Teeqer

Ramps and Tuffers were "marginal" international players and thus lower profile in the sport. Gough was one of the top bowlers in the world for a couple of years.
A bit like Rio Ferdinand is more famous than Gareth Barry. Both international footy players, but different levels of recognition within the sport.

You need to search with the name in quotes, otherwise you get results for both words and not the full name -
Mark Foster 411,000
Martina Hingis 819,000
Emma Bunton 1,020,000 + 178,000 for Baby Spice
Peter Schmeichel 174,000
Colin Jackson 89,000
Tom Chambers 142,000
Austin Healey 827,000 (I removed results containing the word 'car')

As I wrote in another thread, Kelly Brook gets way more Google hits than either Bunton or Hingis....make of that what you will.
I think Google is as good a method as any readily available...and generally much better than the kind of ridiculously biased thesis you tend to get in these threads...but ultimately it's a pub discussion question with no conclusive answer at the end of it.

Surely the amount of google hits is no indicator of "famousness"... All it shows is that there's a hell of a lot of stalkers and weirdos out there who like to create sites showing Kelly Brook not wearing much.
It's obvious that women will get more sites dedicated to them than men, and it's also obvious that more youthful women will have more sites than the older ones. This is because the dirty old men would much rather see pics of Ms Brook, than of someone arguably more famous, but with a few more saggy bits.

The Google method does at least provide a numerical measure of "fame".
Just because 99% of followers of Kelly Brook are perverts as opposed to Baby Spice's followers being music fans does not mean that Ms Brook is actually any less well known / famous than she is! The "discount fame with perverts" argument would certainly apply to an assessment of the most worthy SCD contestant.

No they are not. Most people don't know all the members of the Chinese and Indian cricket teams & I'd be hard pressed to name the England team & I live here. The only one I heard of before Strictly was Gough. And cricket isn't that much followed in the Americas. The only truely international sport is football and even there there are only a few stars in the main teams that are so famous even non sporty types will recognise them and none of them have bothered to go on Strictly. So I agree the most famous person would proabably be baby Spice.

I think the result is right, Baby Spice is the most famous but the figures on the others are can be affected by the fact that web is too expensive to access regularly for most parts of the world. Nobody other than those in UK will have heard of people on soaps or programs in the UK but since usage is so heavy in the UK people will seem more famous than they actually are.

Agreed, which is why it doesn't do to underestimate just how many people will have heard of famous English cricketers in India via low tech means.
