I looked at this the other day, and am all for it, but I'm not keen on putting my address on stuff online, despite it saying it won't be published. Why do they need my address?

I imagine it's to check that you are an actual person and not just making up a name to bump up the numbers on the petition. Maybe they check them against the electoral roll or something???

I'll sign. Excuse my ignorance, but I hadn't ever considered that kittens being sold in pet shops was cruel. I did ring round a few pet shops when looking for a kitten! They didn't have any though, they only had sellers on noticeboards and gave me their contact details. We ended up getting her from a breeder in our area. Very nice lady who really cared about the kittens and their mother.

I'm familiar with the website itself - mostly for laughing at the rejected ones.

It's not just the fact that kittens aren't cared for in the same way they would be in rescue that's the issue. There are other factors aswell. The fact that rescues are full to bursting (more so now than ever) and some unscrupulous people breed their moggies for profit adding to an already dire situation of too many cats/kittens and not enough homes. Also there is the issue that anybody can walk into a pet shop with a bunch of fivers and walk out again with a living breathing creature without having been vetted and homechecked first. Not everyone is as loving and caring towards their pets as the people on this board...unfortunate but true.
Thanks for signing btw

That's a definite negatory OM! This is my whack, DS.

I came across it ages ago on my old favourite Youtube!

The pet shop thing is a real bugbear with me, but some are tightening things up which is great.

I recently was refused purchase of some more goldfish for my (10year old, well kept, well maintained, regularly treated and well balanced) pond, because it didn't have a filter. Didn't matter that the current residents have lived and grown there quite happily for years, but I couldn't argue with the shop's policy, it was there with best intent.

Well that's the thing. You can't argue with policy if you know it's with good intent
I think it's the local councils that regulate the pet shops so it's down to the individual council as to whether they allow it or not. A nationwide ban can only be a good thing

I was in one of the larger Pet shops a while ago, Pet World I think it was, guy went in holding a cage, looked sizeable to me - bought a cage before getting a gerbil- brought it in to buy the gerbil and transport it home. Shop refused on 2 grounds, 1. The cage he'd bought they said was too small to keep the gerbil in and 2. They weren't convinced he wouldn't take it out of their own small darkened transportation box and put it into this unsuitably small cage.

He was raging but I'd rather they 'lost a sale', but put the best interests of the animals they are selling first. Nice to see the store thought the same.

Absolutely!

Hey, how do you post pics on here? I want to add my boys to the pics of our pets thread. My photobucket is set to private so will a link work or not? And which PB code do you use?
Thanks

I'm not sure about this petition heres why...

Today I took my mum to the cat and dog rescue center to look at kittens, she didn't expect it but instantly fell in love with this little black kitten, so she was asked to fill in this form now she is a private tenant, been in the same household for 4 years, landlord is ok with pets, but she was denied the right to reserve the kitten until she gets a letter from the landlord. simple enough no, we discovered the landlord is out of the country so it looks like the kitten will be going to another home.

If this had been in a pet shop, from what I'm led to believe if you have the cash, this little cat would have been with my mum today.

I was reading about those kittens and cats who have a week to find homes or they are getting put down, If you read one of the comments, someone was denied a kitten because their house was next to a busy road from this place that is going to kill all these pets.

I'm all for security measures for giving pets to new owners but if these measures were relaxed more, wouldn't more people go to the rescue centers and avoid pets shops.

I walked into the same C&D rescue place 13 years ago and I still have my little dog and I wasn't asked half the questions my mum was asked filling out that form.

Now it looks like my mum will have to go private to getting a kitten.

If this happened to you, would you sign it?

While I can see your point and respect your decision I still think Pet Shops are no place for kittens. There will always be those who's cats have caught before being neutered and there will always be ads in the papers advertising kittens free to a good home. While nothing can really be done about that the sale of kittens from Pet Shops can be stopped and along with it the people who use their moggies as a breeding machine purely to line their own pockets.
Rescues are more careful than they were years ago and I agree some can go too far but in the main they have the very best interests of the cats and kittens at heart. The same cannot be said of the majority of pet shop owners who just see them as *goods*.
