Love the Kinks, there is simply no better way to spend a hot summers day than to sit out in the Sun with The Kinks on! Pure bliss
or a winters day, sit in from the cold with a nice cup of Rosie, Hallelujah!
Continuing the theme of seasons - 'Autumn Almanac' for the autumn months (and any other time of year in fact!).

Superb opening line to a song:-

♫ "From the dew-soaked hedge creeps a crawly caterpillar ." ♫

Don't forget Father Christmas for Christmas and Summer's Gone for Autumn too.

I always think as much as im a fan of Blur and Damon Alburn, that Charmless Man ripped it off a bit.

I am a teenager (well, 18 on Sunday) and the Kinks are my favourite band, just been scouring boot fairs for record and got some today, yay
my favourite of their records (that I've listened to online) are Village Green Preservation Society and Arthur, I just love how the brilliant Englishness about them and just how happy and delightful their songs are, whilst the slower ones are just so lovely

(so annoyed that my prom is the same day as Hop Farm fest as I'm missing out seeing Bob Dylan AND Ray Davies)

Happy birthday to Ray for today - 21st June!

66 candles to blow out - might take some time!

Love Ray's quintessentially English songwriting.

What a week in the Kinkdom - first Ray celebrates his 66th birthday on Monday (21st June) and now the sad news of the death of the original bassist Pete Quaife on Thursday (24th June).

Article about Pete on the BBC website:-
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertain...s/10415297.stm

Taken from that article and it's quite relevant given the name of this thread.
He had been quoted as saying how unhappy he was during his time in the Kinks, not least because of the fractious relationship between brothers Ray and Dave Davies.

But he also proudly recalled his work on the band's landmark Village Green Preservation Society album.

"Making that album was the high point of my career," he told Jukebox magazine in 2006.

"For me it represents the only real album made by the Kinks... in which we all contributed something."
RIP Pete.

Saw that Pete had died and thought I'd try to The Village Green Preservation Society for the first time, and now I just can't get enough of it. Sitting by the Riverside in particular is just wonderful.

Really glad to be getting into this group now - it's just a shame it took the death of a band member to do it.

I have to say it is sad to have heard of the death of Pete, but he'd had dialysis for a while by the looks, I guess he's out of that misery.

Yes that is a great song, my favourites are Starstruck, the title track and well all the others...plus Days on the bonus track edition. You've got the happiness of People Take Pictures of Each Other, the fun of Picture Book and the scooby-doos, the oddness of Wicked Annabella and story telling of Big Sky about the vastness of the sky/God, and his inability to help even though he'd love to try with its free from problems coda. The phrase 'When the world gets too much for me, I think of the Big Sky and nothing matters much to me' along with 'God Save Mrs Mops, and good old Mother Riley' are my favourites.

One of my fave lyrics from the album. It's so simple and yet effective. Love the album - it's definitely one of my faves. It's my 'using my imagination' album because of the images it conjures up in my mind. With 'Pheonmenal Cat' for example, the cat for me is a big fat ginger cat. A bit like Garfield except this cat flies to places like Katmandu!

Something I thought of when I first heard the album in the early 90's, is how Thomas the Tank Engine was like a modern-day character of the train in 'The Last of The Steam Powered Trains. It's as though Ray was ahead of his time with a train as a character. My imagination really lets rip on the songs on this fab album.

I tried to get into The Kinks on-and-off without any real success, I thought something was seriously wrong with me.

Well, I happened to watch The Darjeeling Limited last night, which features three tracks from Lola Versus Powerman & The Moneygoround, all of which I loved. So I borrowed the CD off of my brother today, and well, it's unbelievable! This Time Tomorrow is stunning.

I tend to think they were at their best on the 'Preservation' albums from 1973 and 1974, but appreciate I may be the only person in the world who thinks that.

Just found out via Twitter that Ray has had to cancel some upcoming US gigs.

Full article from NME below:-

http://www.nme.com/news/ray-davies/53951

Here's part of the article:-

"Ray [Davies] personally did not want to cancel this tour but was ordered by his doctors not to fly or travel until his medical condition has stabilized to their satisfaction," a press release revealed. "At this moment, his doctors could not provide a time frame as to when he could travel to the US."
Here's hoping Ray gets well soon. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong with him medically at the moment?

I revived this thread because I couldn't find any other mention of the special show (almost finished) about Ray on BBC1, 'Imagine : Ray Davies - Imaginary Man'.

I have just two words for him - legendary genius!

Yeah I really enjoyed it too, and I agree, he's terribly underrated as a musician and it's quite bad that he can walk through London singing his own classic songs without anybody recognising him.

Oh well, time for a Kinks night!

It was excellent, and quite sad really.

Also, Ray is on BBC Radio 2 at 1200 on Thursday 30th. Interestingly, he's also with Dave, so it'll be very tense listening.

I had a much older brother who was a teenager in the 60s, so grew up listening to The Kinks.

Great programme tonight .... I particularly enjoy the fact that he genuinely loves all his songs.

I also found it rather sad that when he was standing on Waterloo Bridge everyone was walking by without a clue who he was. He said that he loves being annonymous though ........

A fine songwriter, in the same league as Lennon/McCartney but woefully underrated.
