Did anyone else go to the Pete Quaife "Lighter Side of Dialysis" event at Fortismere School last Saturday?

It was organised by Pete's brother and had my own brother's band on the bill so, seeing as it was my birthday, I decided to pop along and had a great time! Was great to finally see the Kast Off Kinks live, and I got to meet Mick Avory which was a great honour.

My OH is a massive Ray Davies/Kinks fan. We are going to see Ray tonight in Brighton, I really can't wait. Fantastic songwriter.

Enjoy yourselves!

As it's Autumnal I think Ray should perform 'Autumn Almanac'. That song contains one of my fave opening lines of a song. ♫ "From the dew-soaked hedge creeps a crawly caterpillar" ♫ - poetry in motion.

That was the first song he did last night.

He was amazing!

I didn't know them all, my OH did, but I knew most of them. These are just some of the songs he did.

Sunny Afternoon
See My Friends
Dedicated Follower of Fashion
All Day and All of the Night
Dead End Street
Victoria
Tired of Waiting for You
Waterloo Sunset

Encore of Days and Lola. I am a very happy bunny today.

The man is a genius. Loved the support act as well, very talented guy called James Walbourne.

Thanks for the heads-up guys. Think I'll record these to watch over the weekend.

I'm interested to see Dave and wonder when he recorded 'Kinkdom Come' How long after his stroke? My particular interest is because my Mum had a stroke last year, however I'm pleased to say she's doing fine apart from the fact she can no longer go out on her own (she requires supervision).

Be interesting to see the lasting effects (if any) on Dave.

Excellent stuff, but then it's the Kinks, how could it not be? The best Friday night's viewing in ages. Much better than BBC-4's Squeeze night last Friday or their ELO night the Friday before..

You re a little biased I think... that documentary on Jeff Lynn was brilliant...

I ve seen this Dave Davies doc before ... brilliantly done with some very early footage of Ray and Dave.... and lovely scenes on Exmoor.
Looks like his house is on the north coast up there somewhere.
( cant believe that... back in the 60s... Dave let himself be filmed with rollers in his hair ! )

You're probably right! While I appreciate Jeff Lynne's talent, apart from the brilliant "10538 Overture" I've never liked ELO very much.

Squeeze night last week was fairly enjoyable, but not a patch on Kinks night.

The actual documentary had very little to do with ELO and more about Jeff's work as a producer, which I found rather dissapointing given there really isn't a comprehensive documentary on ELO(certainly not in recent times, anyway).

I've seen both the Dave Davies and Ray Davies documentaries before, but they were certainly worth watching again. The Kinks at the BBC was excellent too, although the last two or three songs could more accurately be described as Ray Davies at the BBC.

Death of a clown is a brilliant song...
did Dave write much more ? I always thought that Ray wrote all the songs.

Wasn't 'Funny Face' a Dave song? 'Lincoln County' - think that was a Dave-penned song too. I'm more than happy to be corrected.

I prefer 'Susannah's Still Alive' although it didn't do as well chart-wise as 'Death of a Clown'. They featured a snippet of 'Susannah's Still Alive' on the Dave documentary. Seem to recall hearing that the woman's backing vocals on 'Death of a Clown' was from Ray's first wife. Think those backing vocals are (to my mind) eerie but in a good way!

Must admit I did like Dave's comment on brother Ray - "He's an arsehole".

From YouTube:-

Dave performing 'Susannah's Still Alive' on what looks like 'Top of the Pops' with DLT presenting. Liking the jacket.

Death of a clown... shows just what a brilliant songwriting talent Dave had
... but he was a very good looking guy .... much better looking than Ray .... and he lived a pretty wild hedonistic life in the 60s.. chasing the girls... and downing the odd drink or three.
Meanwhile the more retiring and sensitive Ray was at home writing songs and building up the Kinks legacy .

I think Dave contributed a hell of a lot to the sound of the Kinks and is arguably underrated.
I think his own Death of a Clown song hints at how much influence he had on the Kinks overall sound.

I agree that Ray is an incredible songwriter. But I don't know how much of a listen his songs would have got if they weren't hung on the right framework.

To think he'll be 70 next year!

Coincidentally Chris Sievey aka Frank Sidebottom died in 2010 on Ray's birthday. The connection? Frank Sidebottom had a song modelled on Waterloo Sunset called Timperley Sunset.
