LiL Wayne's verse in "Down" is almost perfect. Read it Carefully amazingly contructed

even if the sky is falling
down like she ‘posed to be
she gets down low for me
down like her temperature
cuz to me she zero degrees
she cold, over freeze
I got that girl from overseas
now she’s my Miss America
now can I be her soldier please
I’m fighting for this girl
on the battlefield of love
don’t it look like baby cupid
sending arrows from above
don’t you ever leave the side of me
and definitely not probably
and honestly I’m down like the economy#

Don't u think?
Lil Wayne?!

I'm sorry, but those lyrics are drop-dead cringeworthy! 'and honestly I'm down like the economy' What's the next line? 'I'll buy you diamonds girl, and satin and lace, then when we're getting grimey you can sit on my face'?

As someone posted above, good songwriters should get more credit - but when it's dross like this, perhaps it's best if they hire professionals in.

Linda Perry deserves a lot more credit. She did after all write Beautiful for Christina Aguilera, and helped both her and Pink to reassert themselves and to find a new, better and more comfortable sound for them.

For me James Morrison is one if the best singer/songwriters out there.

Writes all his own songs and has a fantastic voice.

Great songs such as Broken Strings, Wonderful World and You Give Me Something.

Both his albums are fantastic filled with great songs.

Lil' Wayne had a decent album, but he's not topping any polls. That track won't be remembered in 10 years time, either...

I hope that Jay Sean's chart success allows him to hire a better publicist than you.

I listened to Rap music in the 80's, when it meant something. People like Grandmaster Melle Mel had something to say about the life they were living, and got their point over in a forceful, yet articulate manner. Today it's generally meaningless one-dimensional pap and contrived nonsense about guns, girls and the money they're making. And, to claim that the verse you quoted is 'one of the best of the YEAR!' says more about the poor quality of most Rap music today than it does about Lil Wayne's own songwriting credentials.

Have a listen to this for some real lyrical quality in rap music...

But, if you prefer Jay Sean et al, then good for you, that's your opinion - I'm just giving mine.

it doesn't matter whether you listen to that genre of music or not - i like some of lil wayne's stuff (i'm not a fan exactly) but to put those lyrics forward as the greatest of any song released this year...

i can see how someone who really loves what he does could think those lyrics are the "best of the year", but that's only your opinion, just because you think so doesn't make it fact.

it could be turned around just as easily - if you listen to rap music predominantly, how do you know there aren't better lyrics out there in a song you haven't heard because they're of a different genre?

Plus his verse barely qualifies as the best on Jay Sean's album, never mind best of the year.

Yes, I agree, he is a brilliant songwriter. I was so glad that his second album was IMO actually BETTER than the first - I was afraid he'd be a one-album wonder. I like his songs yes.

Yes with a lot of help from Cathy Dennis

Here is 6 No 1 songs Cathy Dennis wrote:

2000 "Never Had a Dream Come True" S Club
2001 "Can't Get You Out of My Head" Kylie Minogue
2002 "Anything Is Possible" Will Young
2004 "Toxic" Britney Spears
2007 "About You Now" Sugababes
2008 "I Kissed a Girl" Katy Perry

Unfortunately the singer gets all the credit for her creation

Considering she composed "Toxic" and "I Kissed a Girl" she deserves recognition.

it doesn't matter who writes it. it only matters how well its delivered. does anyone care that frank sinatra didn't write his songs? its like claiming that a concert pianist must write each orchestral piece he plays or have no "cred".
i don't care if you write your songs if you can't perform.
cheryl cole of course can't do either...thats another thing all together.
there are plenty of great song writers behind some artists. david foster, baby face, Diane Warren etc..they put out the hits. but they don't generally sing their own stuff and thats fine. its hard to argue their stuff would be better if they only kept it for themselves. btw the david foster hitman dvd/bluray is awesome

I think the OP's point was they deserve more recognition and people like Britney Spears should be referred to as signers/dancers and not artists.

I remember Britney winning best song at the MTV awards for "Baby One More Time" and after thanking everyone mom, dad, god, fans at the end she says "oh and thanks Max Martin for writing the song"

you don't have to worry about the writers. they get a cut regardless and a better one than the arist that might get screwed as you know. i think they get their cut before costs are considered which sometimes wipe out the singers cut. which is why many are trying to get even a partial writing credit for lyrics or whatever these days on their songs.

the writers get bank. don't worry about em.

i think the OP's point was they don't get enough credit and recognition, rather than it being to do with money/royalties.

e.g. Ask the public who Greg Kurstin is and they'll probably have never heard of him.

Yes, writers and co-writers should get more recognition.

I don't see a problem though with acts who dont write their own songs or only co-write. I don't expect actors to have written the screenplay for e.g.

Got to disagree with that there are tons of great songwriters out there.

IMO one the the best lyricists has to be the very under rated Eddie Vedder - far better songs than i've ever heard from Mariah Carey.

The correct title of this thread should be:

More respect should be given to good Artists/Song Writers.

Just because someone writes their own stuff does not give them instant credibility.
