buying new equipment
Hi Please bear with me as I am not very technical. Can anyone tell me if this scenario will work before I go and buy expensive hardware.
We have various requirements for our household and need to know the best solution. Main part of house. We are happy to have Freesat channels only with the ability to record and pause live tv etc as per an HDR PVR plus need the ability to play standard dvd`s on say a cheap dvd player. In another part of the building we want to have a separate system much the same as in the main house. In yet a third part it is necessary to have Sky (probably sky+) as the occupier wants sky sports and movies, This will be connected up via a magic eye to a communal area where we will all watch movies or sports together ie World Cup Ryder Cup rugby etc ( I am aware that this will only show what is on the sky box in the third part) Can we record from the hard drive of the sky+ on to a recordable dvd located in the communal area which will allow people in parts 1 and 2 to sometimes watch channels they dont get ie discovery or movies( depending on the subscription paid to sky.) This is all one household with various family members not a b and b or anything. Im thinking of 2 Humax HDR`s 2 cheapy dvd players 1 sky+ with magic eye and a recordable dvd. It is not vital to have HD capability as we are not that fussy and should I get a dvd recorder with hard drive or is that a bridge too far? No point in having mutiroom sky for the den as the person with the sky+ box will usually be in the den when we show movies or some of the sports etc If anyone has a better way I am all ears |

Forgot to mention we will also be purchasing 2 new tv`s one for the main part and one for the den. The one in the den will be at least a 42" LCD with home cinema bells and whistles. I know some tv`s have built in gizmos so do you advise buying all singing tv`s or separate components?

The crux of your query is about recording off Sky+ onto DVD - suggest you post that to the Sky+ section, if its not already answered there (there are lots of DVD recorder queries there already).
My personal experience of DVD recorders - clunky and horrid, generally attached by scart the quality can be shocking. You might be better looking at a central media centre PC rather than several DVDs and HDRs - I believe XBOX 360s operate well as front ends. |

Hi Julie,
There is a good thread on this web site about having multiple sats in one house remember pvr recievers need two connections http://www.digitalspy.com/forums/sho...='octo+lnb' Regarding DVD recorders I think my Pansonic freesat box has a great picture quality (my eyes give me problems), and is v reliable, but am still paying for it, I think you can get cheap sky boxes from ebay too? hope this helps nick. |
